This tells a lot and explains the hard fall at Clemson.

BV took over at OU starting in the 2022 season. Last coached at Clemson in 2021 season.

The Main Line
@TheMainLinePod

Oklahoma and Clemson points allowed per game, starting with the year before Brent Venables became the HC at Oklahoma:

it HELPS explain it. It's not the end all be all, because...

which is merely one season removed from lawrence. Not having mega-elite sure fire #1 overall NFL draft picks at QB is equally as important, if not more so actually. I mean look at LSU in 2019...defense was meehhh but their QB and offense was so ridiculous that it didn't even matter. Ditto AU 2010. You can cover up a shoddy defense with an elite offense. It's a bit tougher having an elite defense with a shite offense.

That TN number 2 offense got manhandled. If OU can continue to run the ball, they can easily win out.

you realize james coley was our OC and swift and pickens weren't playing much right?

At any rate I shouldn't be surprised that even when heaping praise on LSU, even the slightest perceived negative will be met with the backwoods mouth breathers coming out of the woodwork to argue

Yeah, having Venables was a big plus for Clemson in those days. He's one of the top defensive minds in college football. If OU had him during the Riley years, we likely would have won a NT. That was all that was missing during Baker's time.

More than one title imo

One thing that gets lost in all the head coach changes. It doesn't matter who you hire if they hire bad OC or DC.

Case in point is OU. Riley had a bad DC. Venables had a decent OC in Lebby then made a bad hire in Seth. Arbuckle seems good but jury is out how good until at least next year.

A HC can only do so much. He has to make the right hires to succeed.

The focus should be on who these soon to be new head coaches can hire as OC/DC. Schools need to reserve money to buy out good ones if they want to succeed. All we hear about is the HC but those other 2 positions are just as important. You basically have to make 3 good hires and then all the position coaches you might need too.

Any AD not asking a potential HC these questions is failing. And any AD asking a new HC to try and keep existing OC or DC is tying the hands of new HC. Schools need to prepare dollars to replace most of staff not just HC.

There are a few exceptions where HC is hampering a good staff. But most times the failures are OC/DC and below.

I know this was supposed to be an insult, but it was the James Coley season. We looked like that all year & put up the 50th ranked offense in the nation.

We were so bad that Coley was let go, something almost unheard of in the Kirby era

well that's complete bullshite.

Pickens was suspended for the first half due to pummeling a yellow jacket the week prior.
Swift was heavily banged up which led to a mere 2 carries
And our #2 receiver on the year lawrence cager was ruled out prior to the game

If you're going to be so certain of something, at least be sure you're correct.

You’re right on swift. My bad I was confusing it with the 2018 game.

Where we beat that #2 UGA arse by 3 scores.

I thought this thread was going to be a comparison of Venable's defenses at both places.

Still a nice graphic from the OP.
