Trying to welch out of paying the man his full contract will be a very bad look for LSU.

Always comical to me to listen to fans talk about how much money "they" have when a big name coach is recruited, then explain why they don't have to pay the buyout once they kick him to the curb.

The present value of his buyout over time, with no mitigation, would be somewhere around $35 million. So, if you factor in some mitigation money, $20 million now is not a huge discount.
