Nick Saban gave us a hell of a parting gift by retiring when he did

This upcoming coaching carousel is going to be nasty and really, really expensive for some programs.

Despite some 1st season hiccups, DeBoer appears to be hitting his stride as our coach. His staff has an eye for talent and we don't seem to be playing the NIL back and forth game for recruits.

I'm thankful Nick hung it up when he did. We would probably be in a much shittier spot if he had held on another year.

Now teams are best served firing coaches midseason so the 30 day window doesnt open when teams can easily poach players.

According to BOL, there is no 30-day window after firing a coach.

Greg Byrne deserves a lot of credit for being able to nab the guy he got to replace him as well.

When did that change?

Not doubting it but it was being discussed on various national shows and that update didn’t come up.

It sure as hell bit us when Saban left.

They updated the portal rule for when a coach is fired. The new portal is only 15 days and doesn't open until 5 days after the new coach is hired. Supposed to give new coaching staffs a better chance to convince players to give them a fair shot.

Byrne had his eye on Kalen for years, I guarantee it. His record on hiring coaches is impressive.

Good thing they made this very reasonable change before Saban retired instead of immediately after right?

We wanted to fire him 2 months ago, so there is still time for it to turn on Greg Byrne.

Admittedly, if the DeBoer tenure doesn't work out in the next few years then I think Greg is extremely vulnerable. He was hired to do one thing: make sure what Saban built continues to hum along as a perennial conference title contender and playoff threat. If DeBoer fizzles out and what Saban built is immediately eroded then Byrne would have basically failed on what had to be one of the long term goals he was tasked with when they brought him into the AD.

Right now things are trending upwards for the DeBoer program and you can sort of see the shape of something that is sustainable for period of time in Tuscaloosa. However, one oh shite erases a hundred attaboys. Its like that in any job but magnified in coaching.

Honestly, I wouldn't trade DeBoer for anyone in the country right now.

Much like many things in college football, they seem unable to have enough imagination to see how their rules will work in reality until something breaks in production so to speak.

"Oh damn, that is kinda stupid how our rules lets schools circle a roster like carrion birds when their coach retires or decides to leave of their own accord. We meant for this to be for when schools just fire their coach due to performance!"

Like how the flying frick did you not see that was going to be the case. You only thought about how shitty it is that kids buy into a coaching staff but the school and their fans get impatient and fire the coach. You never thought about coaches leaving of their own accord and the school being pressed to find a coach as soon as possible to stop the roster bleed out.

I was assured by the Swamptards that Husky Harsin was a disastrous hire.

That may be what saves Freeze from getting canned. Too much competition for coach replacements

Yes, some ADs lack the capability of identifying good coaches.

People were blaming him for his honeymoon being ruined by a nonfunctional QB.

He couldn’t even install his offense last year.

The only coach with a better resume than KD right now is Kirby and given what they’ve had to work with from a roster standpoint so far I’d still take KD when you adjust for program resources.

Dabo’s still got a great resume but I am doubtful of his future horizons.

If Dabo were a job candidate for a sales position he’d be the guy who hasn’t hit his numbers since Obama was in office who is trying to skate by on some awards he won a decade plus ago.

There’s no evidence he can replicate past results in the current environment.

Ditto. I thought he was the best hire possible at the time and I still think that. Granted...lose today and people are googling his buyout amount, but that's the nature of the beast lol.

I'd hate to be looking for a new coach right now...none out there are worth paying a huge buyout unless your program is just tanking and you're desperate. I mean, who hires James Franklin? Nothing excites a fan base like hiring the guy just fired for never winning the big games.
