Yesterday my Dad called me and asked me to help him with his resume. My Dad is 75 years old, but he apparently got a job with a company and they needed something for HR.
So, he tells me he's going to send over his resume and we need to update it. No problem, Pops. I'll call you when I'm eating lunch.
So he sends me his resume from 1998. Yes, it was a picture of his resume that he still had from 1998.
Objective: Seeking a role within the University of Alabama's Athletic Department
My Dad retired as a high school coach and athletic director at 47 years old. He had a full pension and insurance, so I guess he wanted to shoot his shot. He had four former players on the team at the time and a certain wide receivers coach was a family friend that had known my Dad since childhood. His resume was top tier and filled with accomplishments. If he had been on the recruiting trail, no door would have been closed. He had and still has that kind of reputation. I was a freshman in college and my brother and sister were both college graduates.
For whatever reason (although it being 98-99 we can all make assumptions) he didn't get the job. Nothing more to the story. He never mentioned it to me or my siblings. He shot his shot and it didn't go in and he moved on.
Just thought it was a cool little bit of Dad lore I never knew.

I feel like this career path doesn’t exist anymore

No it practically does not. In Alabama you can immediately draw retirement from pension system if you work 30 years. However, I don’t think as many people are entering government jobs (especially education) straight out of school anymore. My wife was in her mid-20s when she got started in public education. So she’ll be in her mid-50s before she could retire and draw pension.

Your Dad is a better man than me. He must still have a pretty sharp mind to still be working at that age. I'm trying to find ways to retire in my 50's.

1999?
It worked out for him...it would not have been a good time to join the UA athletic dept...unless he was looking for short term employment lol.

Yeah, it was a crazy time. My Dad actually vouched for Dabo and helped him get his job when he briefly retired from coaching before he went to Clemson.

Update:
Called my older brother and asked him about it. Dad was actually offered a position by Mike Dubose (the weakest handshake I have ever experienced from a full grown man btw). He turned it down because people he knew like Bill Oliver (I could tell you guys a lot of stories about that man)and Dabo said he was on his way out, so he didn't want to start a job and be fired 6 months later. In the end, it worked out for him.
ETA: I can remember hanging out with my Dad and Coach Oliver in 90-91 in Coach Oliver's office. My Mom was an adjunct professor at UA and while she was teaching, Dad and I would walk over to the Ahtletic facility and he and Coach Oliver would shoot the shite. Coach Oliver and would sneak into Coach Stallings office and go to the Golden Flake/Coke/M&M closet and I would fill my pockets and a grocery shack with all the chips, cokes and candy.

I believe that your dad is the man to get the new basketball arena pushed through.
