I think the game in its current form has passed him by. Mike was great at finding 2-3 star guys and making a run every other year or so. OSU doesnt have the NIL to compete. When OSU develops the kids that OU, Tex et.al. overlooked, we poach em.
I think Mike goes and makes a ton of money in TV or Radio etc.

He will, but he shouldn’t

I don’t know why on earth he would do nothing but fish golf and travel the rest of his life

Kind of a shame. He should have started looking elsewhere before shutting down at oSu. Cuz it is obvious he *shut down* for whatever reason.

Now there could be no going back. Hate to see a guy leave the way he did.

His net worth is estimated over 25 million I’d be shocked if it’s not well over 40 million based on his salary and his career

People that build wealth don't just sit down and enjoy. That's what their brat kids do.

He got paid a high salary for a very long time

That’s not the same as an entrepreneur that built a business

I make a very good living and when I reach my financial target, I cannot wait to pull the plug and just travel and pursue hobbies, and serve others

Gundy was the best coach they ever had. He basically raised their expectations so that one losing season was no longer acceptable. For example, the coach before Miles was retained for year 6 after he had posted 4 losing records in his first 5 years. And then Miles going 28-21, 16-16 in the Big 12 there was enough to get him the LSU job. If you go further back in time, Jimmy Johnson went 29-25-3 there, and that got him the Miami job.

I find this statement interesting. We hear it all the time and I do not discount the validity of this.

Something I have found interesting. Coaching in general seems to go in cycles. Somewhere around the 15-17 year mark coaches run into this issue. Gundy is only 58, but was HC at Okie St for 20 years. Dabo is in year 17 and we know how that is going. Look in the past at Phat Phil at UT (16), Mack Brown at UTx (15). Spurrier to a degree was at year 13 between Duke and UF before he took his NFL sabbatical.

I think these guys get into a situation of trying to do the same thing over and over that got them there. I'm not sure why that wall hits like it does, but most coaches hit it. Saban's last 3 years (15-17) we saw a fall off in discipline and other issues with the team. Penalites were ridiculous. He faced issues. Maybe not as glaring as others, but he was dealing with it too.

I'm really interested to see of this window shifts with NIL. If guys burn out or run into issues sooner with the new format we have in place.

If Dan Mullen can still get head coaching jobs Gundy definitely will.

Gundy was good at developing 3 star level talent. But the NIL game just blew him out of the water. He would be a good OC for someone. But I don’t think he would settle for less than a HC position.

Gundy didn't have this problem until year 20. He went 10-4 as late as 2023, which was his year 19. 2024 was his first losing record since his first year in 2005.
