To hire full time officials in our sports. Not part timers who have other jobs. Year round training etc. Paid professionals. That doesn’t mean we will get perfectly called games. But we would see improvement. The SEC office has been run by idiots since Slive retired. There needs to be changes.

I am an Engineer. So that means I don’t know what the current contracts for officials are right now. What I do know is the conference makes enough to make these changes.

But my uneducated opinion is starting pay at $125k. Because officials need to know the rule book inside and out as well as maintain being in great physical shape. Of course all expenses paid as well.

I would add to your initial pay and say SEC officials need to make $175-200k. Thats a great salary for 4 months of work. The other 8 months should be spent on knowledge assessments and physical fitness. Each official should be graded by the office and if they don’t have a passing grade, cut them

Yep. Pay them well so they choose the SEC over another conference and don't need to find supplemental work for the 8 month off-season so it can be spent doing training, etc...

Average NFL ref makes 200k a season so I would pay them that. Too much money on the line each week to go cheap

I absolutely agree. I was spitballing with starting pay. The head official needs to be at $250k. And it needs to be like the Government. No side jobs or pay allowed. With a private audit of family finances. That erases the paid off accusations.

Lastly the crews will answer to some “officials board of directors” with appointees by all schools that oversees the officials. Thoughts?

The WhiteHat on every crew should have to sit through a post-game press conference and answer questions also.

Oh and one last thing…more officials watching on the field. As fans we see the ball get thrown down the field to one guy. But there is likely 3-4 other receivers running around being covered. We don’t want a game full of yellow flags but when the game is on the line egregious penalties need to be spotted and called.

Just my opinion.

Such a slippery slope....its not just officials you gotta hire....its also an army of "security" that basically monitors everything....which im 100% for, but it comes with a heftier price tag.

I like that. I would guess the conference would need around 50 full time officials. One thing I would add is there should be no more ‘crews’. Lately, we’ve had some bad crews bouncing around the league.

Officials should be randomly drawn a week or two prior to the contest and every school should be able to have at least one, preferably 3, blackballs for veto purposes each season

Same for basketball. Don’t need roofers from Nebraska fricking up the NCAA tournament.

“NFL officials are not full-time employees and most have other full-time jobs, though the league does provide benefits like a 401(k) and healthcare. Officiating can be a high-paying, part-time gig, with many officials working in professions like law, finance, and education.”

Not that I disagree with you but the professional league doesn’t have them what makes you think it would ever happen in college.

None of that would even help if the refs are still working directly for the SEC.

Read my follow up posts. I mentioned a committee of reps from each school that oversees the operation as opposed to conference office.
