This rivalry… oldest in and longest running of rivalries in all of the South, not just the “Deep” South… has probably been played in more locations than any other rivalry out there:
38 meetings in Columbus, GA- UGA leads 21-16-1
37 meetings in Athens, GA- series tied 18-18-1
33 meetings in Auburn, AL- UGA leads 19-12-2
13 meetings in Atlanta, GA- series tied 5-5-3
4 meetings in Macon, GA- series tied 2-2-0
2 meetings in Montgomery, AL- AU leads 2-0-0
2 meetings in Savannah, GA- AU leads 1-0-1
That’s 7 different cities that have hosted a game.
Oddly Auburn has had more success in Athens than at home in Auburn. There was a stretch of games from 1976-2002 in which the visiting team was 19-6-2…. Up through 2005, Auburn had an 18-9-1 record in Athens but Georgia has since won 9 straight at home to even the series there.
Through 2005, Auburn had opened up a 5-game lead in the series… 53-48-8. But Georgia’s dominance since 2006 (17-3) has given Georgia a 9-game lead now… 65-56-8.
All-Time Most Meetings for FBS Level Rivalries (through 2025):
135- Minnesota vs Wisconsin
130- Auburn vs Georgia
130- North Carolina vs Virginia
129- Oregon vs Oregon St
129- Cincinnati vs Miami (OH)
128- Stanford vs California
127- Purdue vs Indiana
126- Army vs Navy
123- Kansas vs Kansas St
122- Ole Miss vs Miss St
122- Clemson vs South Carolina
121- Missouri vs Kansas
121- Texas vs Oklahoma
121- Tennessee vs Kentucky
121- TCU vs Baylor
121- Michigan vs Ohio State

The first football game played in the South was Washington and Lee vs. VMI in 1873 in Lexington, VA.

If only kansas hadn't refused to continue playing us after the Big 12 collapsed in 2012. Missed out on what should've been 13 more games.

Yes but they stopped playing in 1902.

Yeah. TX-TAMU also missed out on a bunch.
Auburn-Georgia jumped up 2 games on several rivalries… we got to play a second time in 2017 thanks to the SEC CG and then when all the yankees took 2020 off for the sniffles, we still played.

Interesting stuff...
While games in Columbus, GA and Montgomery make sense to a degree.
I wonder what the back story on Macon and Savannah was. I suppose Macon makes a little sense. But Savannah is kind of out of the way.

Amazing.
In the year 2025, the location, still, with the most games between Auburn and Georgia is Columbus.

The Savannah games were played in 1910-1911 while the Macon games were played in 1904-1907.
I would love to know what caused the games to move… probably a lot of that history is just lost to the ages.
According to the 1910 census, here were the largest cities in AL+GA at that time going by county populations… this was pre-automobile so suburbs weren’t really a thing yet…
BirminghamAL- 226,000
AtlantaGA (Fulton+DeKalb)- 206,000
MontgomeryAL- 82,000
MobileAL- 81,000
SavannahGA- 80,000
AugustaGA- 59,000
MaconGA- 57,000
RomeGA- 37,000
ColumbusGA- 37,000
Meanwhile Auburn was around 33,000 (much was in the city of Opelika at the time) and Athens was at 23,000.
The Atlanta games were mostly played between 1892-1903 which makes sense because Birmingham didn’t explode in population until about 1900. Why they moved it from Atlanta to Macon is a mystery.
1908/09 and then 1910/11 were 2-year stints in both Montgomery and then Savannah…. So I assume that was a deal between the schools. I’d be curious to know why UGA chose Savannah over nearby Atlanta.
1912-1915 was a four year period back in Atlanta… I assume after a few seasons Auburn felt UGA had an advantage (though AU was 2-1-1 in that stretch).
From 1916-1958, every game was played in Columbus except 1929 (Atlanta) and 1949 (Athens). Would love to also know why the location deviated in those years.
Beginning in 1959, the series moved to the two campuses.

Kudos to both schools for ensuring this yearly rivalry has always remained just that. It is a damn shame that some of the others mentioned in this thread have fallen by the wayside.

Yes fascinating. I drove by the old stadium in Jackson, MS a couple of weeks ago and tried to imagine what it was like the few times Auburn played Ole Miss in that stadium back in the day. I imagine it was a bit safer back then at least.

State & Ole Miss both played several games per year in Jackson up until the early 90s. It was fine back then but Jackson as been steadily declining for the last 20-25 years. It's currently a complete crime infested mess.

Yeah. It’s amazing how many teams used to play all over the place.
I can remember Auburn playing Arky in Little Rock also.

Upon a time, LSU played Ole Miss in Jackson, and Arkansas in Shreveport

State - LSU is up there at 117.
LSU longest played series. Unfortunately it pretty much ended last year.
