Sorry for getting this out late.

Just an FYI - this is supposed to be a conversation starter, so feedback and thoughts are definitely welcome. I don’t claim to be spot on with my commentary, but I am willing to share my thoughts.

Enjoy the epic.

Bring on the Hate…

‘I’m betting Brian Kelly blamed his wife when she got pregnant with his child.’

‘Those Seminoles look great playing inferior competition at home, but I don’t think they are as good as everyone is sayin’

‘Arkansas reminds me of those Oklahoma Sooner teams under Lincoln Riley except without the offense.’

‘Hugh Freeze’s Destiny is not on the football field. Unfortunately, his Destiny works along side Sinnamon, Maserati, and Texas coach Jeff Bank’s wife, the pole assassin.’

‘Don’t tell me it doesn’t mean more in the SEC. Heck, Chandler Morris hasn’t played in the SEC in years, yet the great Chad Morris’ son just walked all over FSU just to spite Bama.’

‘Saw that top transfer receiver for Georgia, Noah Thomas, landed around $800k in NIL through the portal. Sure was a shame that Bama tackle got more yardage than him in that game, but at least Thomas has 2 more touches and 13 more yards on the year’

‘Tennessee, Karma is still making it rain like R Kelly of biblical proportions on the entirety of the UCLA football program (0-4) and a winless season is assured unless they pull off some fluke win’

‘It didn’t get a lot of coverage this weekend, but I was glad to see Brian Kelly, Hugh Freeze, and James Franklin got recognized. They were all celebrated for their lifetime achievements by the Big Game Bob Stoops foundation.’

‘I’ve never seen anybody fall up a flight of stairs better than Bobby Petrino.’

‘That was another bad loss for Florida, but I have to give credit to their Defense. Nobody spat on anyone and nobody threw a shoe.’

Rant [ON]

First let’s start with a preamble that includes the following teams: Auburn, Florida, LSU, South Carolina, and Texas.

These teams all have strong defenses and questionable offenses. They appear to all share a common theme: offensive coaches need to adjust their schemes to their personnel and capabilities, but they all seem to want to force their talent to fit into their scheme. It hasn’t been working, and at this point in the season, there is concern whether any of their egos will comprehend this. They need to take a few steps back to take steps forward. Reduce the complexity, simplify the offense, and then build upon that success and grow from there. Figure out what you do well and do more of that, and figure out your weaknesses are, and minimize that. And play better balanced ball for a couple of these teams, so they aren’t so predictable. These coaches get paid a boatload of money, so to witness these offenses as they are, I place the blame squarely on coaching.

Take LSU. That offense is phenomenal when it has a dual threat Heisman QB, but what offense doesn’t? The last two years has shown this offense can’t perform up to standards with a mostly drop back QB who runs on occasion. In addition, LSU is known for their running backs, but they have been mostly absent the last two years.

Hugh Freeze talked exactly on this subject in an interview this week. My problem here is why didn’t he figure this out last week? If we see the same result against Georgia, and hear the same commentary after the game, Auburn fan’s heads will explode.

It feels like Shula has introduced something that has reduced the effectiveness of South Carolina. LaNorris was clearly much better last year. I don’t know this for a fact, but it feels like he brought in a whole new offense instead of building on what the Cocks did well last year. Instead of executing, he has created confusion that prevents the cocks from executing at a higher level.

For Florida, they should be building off their season from last year, but it feels like they are starting over from scratch in a new offense. It’s not like there was 100% turnover on offense. They have returning starters, but aren’t playing like they have played in this offense before - puzzling.

For Texas, Sark had to know what he had in Arch this year (and he can still figure it out by the way). Dial back the offense. Don’t call plays because that is what the situation calls for. Call plays because Arch has a higher percentage of executing it. Let him grow, build confidence, then expand the playbook.

I don’t know how to explain this negative turn for these teams other than coaching, and I should note highly paid coaches. I’m sure each team has extenuating circumstances that may limit them, but always put productivity above ego. But it appears the egos are winning to the detriment of their teams.

The season started on a high note with a win over top ranked Clemson, and has gone downhill from there. Nuss is apparently playing hurt with a core injury, the offensive line either can’t run the ball or the coaches won’t call it, the defense allowed almost 500 yards to Ole Miss, and LSU’s best win has lost all its luster. I’m not ready to throw in the towel on the tigers, but there is certainly an urgency to fixing its problems with the key problem being getting the offense to function effectively.

I’m going to assume the defensive performance was an anomaly. They have looked great outside of this game, and Lane excels at offense. This is something to keep an eye on as the season progresses, but one game is not a pattern. The offense is the bigger, immediate concern.

The biggest question is likely whether to stay with Nuss or not. We know what he is capable of, but he isn’t coming close to that expectation. How long do you wait to make a change in year 4 where all the fans expect a playoff run. Is the backup that much worse? A playoff run is certainly not out of the question, but progress needs to be made immediately. LSU’s next opponent is South Carolina that has a strong D, followed by Vanderbilt, A&M, and Alabama. If LSU doesn’t figure things out quick, the hole they will have dug themselves will be too deep to climb out.

I’m not hating on Nuss. It just feels like making a change at QB is less risky than replacing the offensive line. Let him heal if that is your best shot at succeeding, but the offense just isn’t acceptable at the moment. Something has to change.

#5 Georgia (3-1, SEC 1-1, P4: 1-1, Non-P4: 2-0, AP: -)

I had been giving Georgia a pass for starting slow. “They will get it figured out by the time conference comes around.” Well - they haven’t. I’m not saying it’s time to panic, but it needs to be figured out sooner than later or more upsets may come their way. There are some really talented defenses ahead on your schedule.

Probably what concerns me the most is that Georgia hasn’t looked particularly good against the better competition. Slow starts are becoming a trend, and playing from behind is not a recipe for success. It bit you in the arse Saturday. I was also surprised by the time of possession. Bama held the ball for almost 10 more minutes than Georgia.

3rd down was a problem for the Georgia defense in this game, but it felt more like Ty Simpson excelled on 3rd downs vs Georgia failing. This is something to keep an eye on to ensure this isn’t a real problem.

The good news is you get a couple of weaks to figure things out unless Kentucky or Auburn figure things out on offense.

2, 1, 2, 3, 3, 1, 2, 1 - Georgia’s recruiting ranking the last 8 years. Incoming talent is not the problem with your 1-7 record against Bama under Kirby. One would have to think that some of this talent hasn’t panned out, but maybe there are some coaching issues as well. The team hasn’t dominated like years past - at least not yet.

You have so much talent, most teams won’t be able to hang, but there are a couple of teams that could win if you don’t start clicking better on both sides of the ball. The schedule looks favorable for a playoff run, but you still have to prove it week in and week out.

It’s frustrating to see the first drive of each game sputter and go nowhere. This was the first game A&M scored on the first drive, so fans were expecting big things the rest of game, and it didn’t happen offensively. The offense looked pretty dominant a lot of the game, but penalties continue to be a huge concern, and Auburn did a good job in forcing field goals instead of touchdowns. A&M moved the ball on the ground and through the air, but couldn’t find the end zone after the first drive. I wasn’t disappointed in the offense, but how can one be satisfied putting up 414 yards and only scoring 16 points. Hopefully this is a one off and not a pattern moving forward.

Concerns: 1) Penalties must come down, 2) kicking has been inconsistent (not sure anything can be done here though) 3) Reed isn’t scrambling this year (I’m hoping they are saving this, but this seems more like he has been retrained to stay in the pocket - this isn’t really bad, but it’s an opportunity to generate more offense than we are)

Reed seems to do well reading the defense in front of him. It’s my belief that Auburn tried to protect their biggest weakness - the pass game. As a result, it opened up the run game which has been their strength. Let’s give the A&M O credit as well as the run game looked the best it has looked all season in my opinion.

I’m still not sure on where the defense is, but I liked what I saw against Auburn. I think Auburn has a dangerous and explosive offense, but A&M kept them in check the whole game outside of one drive when they scored a field goal. I was a little shocked at how good they looked, but I don’t know whether to attribute it to the D being much better than I thought, Auburns offense not being as good as I thought, or a little bit of both. I’m going with the last option at the moment. I need to see more from both teams to make a better assessment.

Technically, the defense gave up 10 points, but 7 of those came after a 70+ yard interception the offense gave up to the A&M 2. I was skeptical of the defense, but they were on point today. The difference in the game.

Credit the defensive coaches for basically scheming Cam Coleman out of the game (especially after what he did to A&M last year). 0/15 on 3rd and 4th downs, 5 sacks, and allowed 1 yard in the 4th quarter.

Penalties are going to be why we lose a game in the future if that is not fixed. I could have been the difference today with a single explosive play from an explosive offense.

Field goals are an ongoing concern. We make more than we miss, but I don’t have the confidence that we have a clutch kicker for a game winning opportunity. Decent but not consistent enough.

The good news is we came out with a win. The bad news is this is the second week in a row we could have had a dominant win but turned it into a nail biter. At this point, penalties are our biggest weakness. If we don’t solve that, it will bite us in the arse at some point this season.

The last two games have been won two separate ways. Notre Dame was the offense, and Auburn was the defense. That doesn’t guarantee anything, but having the potential to take over a game on either side of the ball is a great quality to have in a team. Wonder Twin Powers - Activate

I continue to be amazed by the potential that is left on the field the last two games. The difference between good teams and great teams is achieving that potential. Hopefully both sides of the ball will come out clicking on all cylinders and we can see what this team can really do putting together a complete game.

Moving forward, if we get the penalties down and click on both sides of the ball, this team has the potential to do some damage.

One of the top games of the week, and Ole Miss got the win.

Hard to say how good the Ole Miss Defense is, and I mean no disrespect here (I did the same with A&M). The defense looked much improved, but is it because they are improved or did it appear that way because LSU is really struggling. Probably a little of both here.

LSU has a good defense, and the Rebels carved them up pretty good, but the penalties. Make ‘em stop! This feels like an A&M move. Let’s take a strong win and turn it into a nail biter. These penalties could be the difference in upcoming games.

One more playoff caliber win, and the Rebels will elevate to the next tier. Don’t frick this up Ole Miss.

Back to back exciting games for the Vols, except this week, the Vols pulled out the win in overtime. Another tough game that could have gone either way, but the Vols found a way to pull it out.

This felt like this week was the inverse of your game last week. Against Georgia, you punched them in the face, got a lead, and couldn’t quite hold on for victory. This week, the Vols got punched in the face, State took the early lead, but the Vols hung in there and came out with the win in overtime. As stressful as the last two weeks were, that is progress in finding a way to win.

I feel like the D should be better than they are performing, but the situation reminds me of the Sumlin days at A&M. With Heupel’s offense, he appears more focused on explosive plays and points, and less importance on ball control. This style of play can be hard on the defense because the defense ends up getting gassed from being on the field a majority of the game. In addition, it can give opposing offenses more opportunities. Note: I’ve only watched your last two games and the Syracuse game, so this small sample size could be off. Anyway, this may explain why the defense is not as good as I think they should be. It certainly affected A&M’s defensive reputation under Sumlin, and it may apply here at Tennessee as well.

Where this problem really gets magnified is when the Vols play a good defense. More short drives and turnovers result in a lot of pressure on the defense. Anyway, this is the major concern I have for the Vols moving forward. This may not even be an issue, but the last two games indicate a possible problem and there are some tough defenses ahead.

Outside of turnovers, the offense looks potent. The Vols have a nice mix of running and passing as well as a nice ratio of punching it in the end zone a great majority of the time vs field goals.

Hatin’ arse Spurrier might be poking some fun y’all’s way, but that was an impressive win on the road against a top 5 team. Bama hasn’t looked particularly great so far, but against Georgia they did. Have you found your footing or is this a week of exceeding expectations facing a hated rival? My guess is you found your footing, but time will tell.

Bama came out firing on all cylinders putting Georgia in a hole that they just couldn’t climb out. The second half wasn’t as exciting as the first (Bama was scoreless) but Bama was able to hold onto the win.

Impressive Bama was able to possess the ball for 10 more minutes than Georgia. That is a credit to both your offense and defense.

Hands down the best play of the game was the throw to the o-lineman. That dude was like a bowling ball going down the lane. Get the man more touches.

Alabama is sharpening their iron, and they will have several more opportunities as they currently have 5 more ranked teams on the schedule. There are more tests ahead, but this win keeps Bama in control of their destiny.

Side Note: luckily, Bama plays in the SEC, so they will have some wiggle room to beat some ranked teams, but Wisconsin and FSU aren’t reflecting well on their resume at the moment.

Vandy didn’t have a strong 1st half as they were playing from behind most of it, but they kept after it and struck late to lead 31-21 at the half. I was having Arkansas flashbacks, but Vandy was able to overcome the Utah State momentum (who I thought played great for a G5 team on the road).

The second half felt like an entirely different game. The defense locked things down (until they gave up two touchdowns late). While the offense wasn’t as productive as the first half, they still put it on ‘em for an easy win.

Looking forward, there has to be some concern with how many points Vandy gave up to Utah State with Bama on deck. In addition, Bama looked pretty damn good. Statistically speaking, Vandy should have an advantage running against the Bama D, but that is why the games are played. Should be another fun game.

If you play the 1st half this week like you played last week, you may find yourself against an insurmountable lead. Anchor Down!

It’s good to see State back in the saddle, and once again doing well on both sides of the ball. They may not have won this game, but took another step in the right direction. Pushed a good Tennessee team to the brink and easily could have won this game. State may have lost in overtime, but who isn’t impressed with this turnaround. They are building a sustainable base to build upon on both sides of the ball.

As a fan, it must be frustrating to not get the win, but keep doing what you are doing and the wins will start to stack up.

That was a hell of a fake punt. Too bad that next play happened: strip sack and touchdown. That may have been the difference in the game, but shite happens sometimes. Give Tennessee credit for making a great play.

It was there for the taking. That’s probably the next step for State: finishing out games for the win. I thought State looked like the better team, but the Vols snuck back in the game and stole it in overtime.

State lost 4 starters in the game during the game by my count, yet still faught hard on both sides of the ball. I haven’t seen anything on injury updates, so I don’t know if this will be a huge concern this coming week or not. Would certainly like to see State at full strength.

I’m not looking forward to this coming week as a vastly improved State always plays A&M hard, and is very capable of pulling off the upset.

Everybody is down on Auburn for losing two 1 possession games to 2 top 6 teams. Now having said that, the offense does need some work.

The offensive line doesn’t work well with the quarterback who doesn’t work well with the receivers who need the running game to make them less predicable. It also seems like the play calls are out of sync with reality. Virtually no running calls, and the passing game is running routes that ignore the reality that the ball needs to get out quick or it ain’t getting out.

The issue is Freeze is known as an offensive guru, and the offense has looked miserable the last two games, but let’s give credit to the defenses they have had to play.

The problem for Auburn is they have formidable opponents still on the schedule starting with a wounded Georgia followed by an undefeated Missouri. There is tremendous urgency in getting this offense out of neutral and moving it into gear.

The offensive coaches better be working on some wrinkles because opponent coaches are keying in on how A&M was able to scheme Cam Coleman out of the game. How are they going to get him more involved now?

I listened to the offensive coordinator on Monday talk about how good the run game was. Really? Why didn’t they attempt to run against A&M? They were in the game the whole afternoon, yet actively chose to not run the ball consistently. The coaching staff definitely has blame here. Are they going to change and start balancing their attack, or are they just going to complain after the game about how they gave up on the run game too early? Time will tell.

As bad as the offense played, Auburn was one explosive play away from winning this game.

That O line is a problem that is hard to solve in season. 9 sacks last week, 5 this week. You will do fine against lesser competition, but against equal or better competition, it’s going to be a difficult road.

At some point, you have to assess your talent against what plays your are trying to execute and start scheming to minimize your deficiencies and leverage your strengths. It feels like they are calling plays that are currently beyond the players capacity. The definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over and expecting different results. If they don’t get that run game going, and continue to rely on a passing game that hasn’t worked the last two games, they are likely to get the same results.

I still think Auburn is a good team and a dangerous team. Prove me right

I’m still not sure what to make of the Auburn offense as well as the A&M defense. Maybe the A&M defense is much better than everyone thought, but they haven’t looked that great (until this week).

I don’t know this for a fact, but it appears Auburn schemed the defense to help out the pass D, since that has been their weakness. We got some yardage, but nothing like in prior games. I suspect this may have affected your run numbers.

The lack of rushing is bizarre as it has happened two weeks in a row. In addition, Freeze has always been run first. To abandon it all of the 1st quarter doesn’t make sense. How do you know it won’t work if you don’t try it?

The BAD: only 8 rushes for the game, 1 yard gained in the 4th quarter.

The GOOD: It didn’t feel like the defense was playing very well, but at the end of the game, the score said they did. Other than the first drive of the game, the defense held A&M to field goals.

Everyone is piling on now that Auburn is 0-2, but they have lost to 2 top 6 teams. Does the offense have issues? Yes, but Auburn was a single explosive play away from either tying or winning in both losses. If Auburn can manage to unlock a little bit of their offense, that could be the difference moving forward. The defense is going to give the offense a punchers chance. Is Hugh going to punch his way to some victories and earn his way back to contender status?

I think Notre Dame has a pretty potent offense, and that doesn’t mesh well against a porous Arkansas defense. Notre Dame led 42-13 at halftime.

The offense has been fantastic, but they didn’t appear to show up against Notre Dame. Because the offense wasn’t able to stay on the field, it just magnified and worsened the defensive effort.

Sorry Sam. I like you but it’s time for a change.

I don’t know if my hog fans will agree with this or not, but Petrino was the reason the Hogs lost that game. Everybody knew it would be a shootout, and he get’s rewarded for that putrid effort? Kind of leaves a bad taste in mouth, but at the same time seems very Bobby Petrino’ish.

That defense came alive and got 2 first half scores, but that offense continues to struggle hard. Missouri held the ball for 10 more minutes, and the defense can only do so much.

Does the oline suck? Do the oline coaches suck? Do the play calls suck? Does LaNorris suck? What is going on here?

Is this a coaching problem or a talent problem?

I have so many questions. It doesn’t make sense.

I don’t know if I should be impressed or concerned for you. That’s a lot of work you’ve put in and the first post was sent at 2:05 and the last at 2:11 which means you had multiple posts being worked.

Who comments on a meaningless added word, but doesn’t comment on the thread?

Why don’t you weigh in with a comment on the statement itself if you take to time to comment?

Give credit to Elko for letting Georgia steal Noah Thomas and bringing in Concepcion and Craver.

Every week, I exhaust my jokes and worry about the coming week, but as long as they keep coming, I’ll keep sharing. I can’t guarantee good zingers every week, but I’ll bet I have a few left in me.
