Just remember we could have had Lane

But HY didn't want to get into a bidding war. So he hired an offensive line coach and gave him a massive buyout.

There difference in getting lane would have been less than the difference of two losses with the contract HY game Pittman.

Hunter bawked at $1-2m then ended up giving it to the career offensive line coach. I’ve said that since he fired the chick and got Sexton. Hunter should have been fired that day.

Hunter has destroyed football after Jeff Long cut its legs off.
Hunter hired a sleepy Oline coach. Gave him a completely unnecessary contract extension and raise. Kept him last year when it was the year to make a change.
And this schedule is completely stupid. Ark St in LR, at Memphis and ND at home. We should be taking the Mizzou approach to scheduling.

But remember we’re only 2 plays away from being 4-1 right now…

Was having this debate a day ago with a friend. Was it Hunter that balked at getting into a bidding war to get Lane or the boosters didn’t want to pony up the money when Ole Miss came into play? I thought it was the first he heard the second. Might be a mix of the two. Just curious.

It doesn’t matter how many other schools there are to compete with IMO. Everyone and their mother would have hired Napier over Cignetti. We need an AD that can evaluate the right fit and look down the road at who can be successful, not just the flashy names that everyone is after. Those aren’t a slam dunk either.

I'm terrified that we're about to hire a washed up Mike Gundy. He and HY are two peas in a pod concerning NIL.

Sometimes things just don't work out for reasons that aren't entirely obvious or visible. I think Napier is one of those circumstances. He replaced Mark Hudspeth at Louisiana, who had three losing seasons in a row and never did better than nine wins his tenure. Napier fixed the losing seasons his first year, then won 11+ games each of his next three years before Florida hired him. Well, he went 10–1 in 2020, but that was for a ten game regular season. So he built that program almost immediately and then sustained the success, proving he wasn't a flash in the pan. There really isn't any good reason he should be failing at a premier, destination college football school. He just… is. Napier was a smart and safe hire by all metrics.
I said since day one of hiring Pittman: the guy could end up being the best we ever had, and I'll give him every fair chance. But hiring someone with not only no HC experience, but no coordinator experience is just needlessly increasing the factors that would make him a bad hire and minimizing the factors that mitigate the risk. Even if we fumbled on Lane, we went with the riskiest, dumbest choice we possibly could have.
I mean, look at Drinkwitz. He wasn't exactly a smart choice. He had one whole year of HC experience, going 12–1 using the roster and taking over the program another guy built from scratch and just continuing the machine. He hadn't proven he was capable of winning when the machine needed maintenance. Despite the risk, he's absolutely killing it at Missouri, and his predecessor he replaced at Appalachian State couldn't hack it at Louisville.
We could have had Drinkwitz if we wanted. He spent most of his life in Arkansas. Went to school at Alma and Arkansas Tech. Even if he was a risky choice, he was less risky than Pittman. But that would have been marginally smarter than the dumbest fricking thing on the planet, and Lord knows we can't have that shite. Might give people the wrong impression.
In other news, I forgot Arkansas was playing today. Again. Got on here to find the game was already over since I never knew what time it was supposed to start. Not surprised by the amount that was scored on us, but I thought we'd do a little better than 13 points.

At what point does the SEC say even Vandy is trying, you need a new AD and coach asap?

Lane wasn't coming here after the Chad years. If we had bid higher Ole Miss would have matched us and Lane would have gone to Ole Miss.
Pittman brought us back from oblivion... and we should have eased him out the door a year or two ago. Now, it is a firesale. Everyone must go.
Get a young program builder and hope for the best. Someone with some discipline.

If Kiffey wanted to be our coach, he would be. Everyone recognizes that we don't produce enough SEC caliber players, which puts any coach in a hole right off the jump. We can blame it on HY or whomever, but Kiffin was playing us for more money, just like Gus did for 20 years.

Most of you don’t remember how low Ole Miss was at the time, they just fired a coach because a player acted like a dog and peeing. Matt Luke.. it was as low or lower than Arkansas and we had more money.

Revisionist history, in a way... We most definitely did not have more money for the hire, and more than that... For NIL prior to there being a NIL, lol...
and the worst part. We have HY while they had Keith Carter!!!

Colorado and UNLV both hired coaches to contracts they didn't have the money for at the time of the hire.
Both act like winning brings in more money than middling or losing.
