I know there was 1984, although beating the Barn ended that on a decent note, but it escapes me why in some posts people are lumping Perkins’ tenure in with all the other times we were lost in the wilderness.

The man was a grumpy SOB, but was also a decent, misunderstood man who loved Bama and put a disciplined, well-prepared team on the field that reflected well on the university, and competed.

He left here for a deal … complete control of an NFL franchise … that I promise you would have turned Saban’s head before he really got permanently comfortable and locked in here.

I promise you, Ray Perkins would not have put up with that crap Saturday, although we wouldn’t have had that crap because his team would have been properly prepared.

Shula cost us an SEC title in '85 with an INT in the backfield vs 10rc.

Perkins was 32-15-1. We had a bunch of injuries in '83 and '84, the worst being Goode's knee injury.

We won 10 games his last year and had the top recruiting class coming in until Tamp Bay hired him.

We just had a lot of bad luck those seasons along with injuries. 11 of those losses were by 7 points or less and in one of those we got f**ked royally at State College. I know we’re not playing horseshoes or throwing hand grenades but you could pretty much expect that his teams were going to compete. We can’t even compete right now.

But my point is that Perkins should not be put in the same pile as DuBose …

Perkins sucked...never won more than 10 games, never won the conference, never went to a major bowl......plus he was and a-hole to boot. Would tell fans on his call in show their questions were stupid.......horrible coach....he was terrible in New York and Tampa Bay as well.......great player, great talent evaluator, but sucked arse as a coach

Perkins was a good coach. His failing was that he did not like recruiting.

While at the Giants he and Ron Erhardt created what is probably the most used offensive system in football that used concepts and packages of concepts rather than route trees and lengthy verbiage. It’s used even more so than the west coast offense. The Patriots during their long dynasty used the Erhardt-Perkins offense the entire time.

You have to at least be great schematically to create something lasting like that.

You must not remember Coach Bryant and how he would get a little testy on his call in show. Occasionally, a caller would say “You should’ve run this play during the game.” and Coach Bryant would say, “Well, when you get your team, you can run that play.”

We've had multiple coaches worse than Ray Perkins.

And this one here most closely resembles Bill Curry v2.0. The man could get the team jacked up enough to compete with the Philadelphia Eagles one week, then either barely scrape by or get beat by Pearl River Community College the next. I predict we will struggle against La Monroe again this week and win a game that is closer than it should be, then give UGA all they can handle in Athens. Kalen is just like Curry.

Not just like. Curry at least made some effort to exert discipline.

The last time DeBoer did anything like this was never.

Talking about Perkins, he left the Giants a good team that the Big Tuna capitalized on. He was a PR nightmare, but not a bad coach.

Perkins was the last one to bring back the white helmets, wasn't he? Can't remember the game.

Yes. More than one game.

He was. Personally, I liked the white helmets from time to time.

Ray was just a no BS character with no smooth edges, just jagged points, to his personality. He was like that when he played, he was like 24 and already married his senior year, one of those people who was already old and mature even though he was still young.

I met him at one of Wimp's basketball camps.

His son was attending the camp.

Didn't seem that bad to me.

If I remember correctly, one of the reasons he left was because his abrasive personality did not win him any friends with boosters. He just couldn’t handle the politics and PR of the job and pissed off a lot of the wrong people. They didn’t run him out of town, but they didn’t beg him to stay either.
