There is this narrative being pushed that the teams in the SEC don’t have as much money as teams in the Big Ten and that is why the SEC is no longer dominant in the current NIL era. That is bullshite. Texas, Texas A&M, and Florida have a shite ton of money and their football programs still suck arse.

The reason the SEC sucks right now is because the coaches in this conference suck, relatively speaking. Kirby Smart is the only SEC coach currently in the conference who has won a national championship.

15 years ago, the conference had Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, Les Miles, and Steve Spurrier. And even the second tier coaches at that time had won SEC Championships and Sugar Bowls (See Mark Richt).

If Alabama, LSU, and Florida can get rid of their clown coaches and find competent coaches, the SEC will be dominant again.

The transfer portal has absolutely hurt the SEC. We used to hoard the talent, that can't be done anymore.

This is true. The NIL argument is bullshite, though.

LSU's has the second best win percentage in the conference.

Can't say the same for the other two.

That and a very illegal and elaborate surveillance plan that got him and Stallions blackballed for 10 years

He's only been there three years, we'll see if that changes.

Kirby made the NC game in his second year ever as a HC.

I personally think Kelly is an excellent coach, though I reserve the right to say otherwise at a later date in pursuit of pushing my own narrative.

The SEC as a whole has definitely benefited from NIL. Teams like Missouri, Ole Miss, South Carolina, and others are able to pull more talent than before. And the transfer portal means that those same teams (as well as pretty much everyone in the SEC) can cherry pick the best young players from other conferences. The league as a whole has gotten even better than before, but it's most noticeable in the middle. Last season there were six teams that finished 5-3 in the league and five teams finished with 10+ wins.

Just because a handful of teams in the Big 10 (Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State and Oregon) are gaining ground on the upper echelon in the SEC doesn't mean the league as a whole is worse off.

Dan Lanning, Ryan Day, Dabo Swinney, Mario Cristobal, Sark, Mike Elko, Marcus Freeman, Josh Heupel, Eli Drinkwitz, Shane Beamer (note that I do t necessarily think these coaches are good coaches but acknowledge that they are better than BK).

Marcus Freeman accomplished more last year than BK has accomplished in his whole career.

Let’s face it - the SEC had no where to go but down. They were dominant for a 20 year period with all those Hall of Fame coaches being able to hoard 4 and 5 star talent.

But times have changed and it is good for the sport. A large swath of the country was being left behind. I agree that NIL is not the issue for the SEC although it has stripped away a lot of players to 2nd tier programs. For instance my team, GT, has a bunch of dudes who would have signed with Clemson, Auburn, UGA, and others if we didn’t have NIL to offer.

The big issue is the portal because in no way would Florida be able to keep both Leak and Tebow today, Schools like Bama and UGA have no where near the depth they had 3 seasons ago. And we all see the results. UGA just lost to ND with Kirby as head coach. I could NEVER have imagined that. Bama just lost to a portal collection team.

The expanded playoffs and less juggernaut teams will make this sport way better as more fanbases will stay involved. Sure, the fanbases of the usual top 10 teams will have a long period of mental readjustment as they see their teams lose more regular season games they ever but when they win playoff games the payoff will taste even sweeter for all of us.
