Question. Is it time to get rid of the SEC championship game?

I believe it’s time to get rid of the SEC championship game. In the era of the college football playoffs, that game does nothing but hurt the SEC. Thoughts?

If we do that then we need to drop the FCS opponents in the regular season.
9 game conference schedule, SEC-Big 10 Challenge game and 2 other Power 4 OOC games.

Sure, let’s kill yet another classic college football tradition. Why the hell not?

It makes a lot of money.
Until it doesn’t it will continue regardless of whether it hurts one of the participants or not.

It has been time but they will never because that means giving up that money they make off the game

No. Otherwise Texas would've been SEC champion last year with the easiest conference schedule while UGA played the hardest.

Where did I say that the SEC has always had the championship game? Do you really believe that classic traditions can’t develop over the span of thirty years?

UGA vs Texas rematch was entertaining to watch, but the stakes were incredibly low with both teams in the playoffs no matter the result. It actually ended up hurting Georgia since Beck got injured in the game, and probably cost them a deeper playoff run.
Unfortunately the golden age of the SEC title game with actual meaning behind it is over.

Logically? Yes, get rid of it.
Realistically? No. The SEC Championship game is high value inventory for the providers of big money.

The day it begins to end is when coaches start to bench starters, which will then cause fans to not tune in, and the first round of playoffs outdraw it.
An alternative would be finding a way to incorporate the championship games into the playoff or converting into a play-in game.

Without the SEC Championship game, Georgia wins the NC last year.

What happens to the loser of the SECCG? They go to the playoffs, too. With Byes going to the best teams this year, rather than automatically to the conference winners, this game is still just a money grab.
PS, if your team has never been there or is never going, you have no idea how many injuries were sustained in this extra game, and it completely changed the outcome of the Playoffs. I have learned to loathe this game.

Georgia was physically beat to a pulp after surviving Texas in the SECG. They never really recovered in the playoffs.
Meanwhile Ohio State came dancing in with bells on.
