Also strong chances the playoff will expand soon to either a 14 or 16 team format

The 12-team College Football Playoff will move to a straight seeding model this fall, rewarding the selection committee’s top four teams with the top four seeds and a first-round bye, multiple sources told ESPN. The 10 FBS commissioners and Notre Dame athletic director Pete Bevacqua, who comprise the CFP’s management committee, reached the unanimous agreement necessary to make the change during a call on Thursday afternoon.

Just go back to 4 teams.

While I agree… would prefer it be 4… this seeding thing was a good move
ArizonaSt and Boise getting byes was stupid

I don't think anyone should get a bye and one should play 14 etc...
Too much time off.

So no incentive to win your conference championship game.
I guess it just doesn't mean more.

Hopefully you mean 16. 14 wouldn't work in your scenario.

It would mean a lot more to the underdog for sure. If you're a 5th ranked UGA playing a 1st ranked Texas, then you've got a bye on the line should you win in it.

It means you get an auto bid so it's especially important for the lesser teams that won't get in unless the win as for the elite teams it's a matter of seeding importance

The conference championship game continues to be an abomination to college football back to the BCS. It turns out that rewarding championship game wins instead of the highest-ranked teams has been proven to be just stupid, again.
When Roy Kramer got his vision of the great money grab, that is what it has remained through all these iterations of the playoffs. And as we keep expanding, Kramer's dream continues to be tits on a bull.

The problem is, was and always will be that about 40 or so programs are playing a different game than everybody else but everybody else expects to be treated like one of those 40....and those 40 are stuck playing those who arent playing the same game and many of those 40 like that because it pads their record. Boise State in a playoff with ALabama, for example, would be akin to a 12 and under team being in a playoff against a high school team....its just stupid....

Boise State losing 31-14 to Penn State is so much worse than Tennessee losing to OSU 42-17......
It's one team in a field of 12 or potentially 16. The small schools should get at least one representative.
The biggest problem of the current format is the conference championship games. There should not be a possibility of 2 schools playing 3 times in one season.
It would have been bullshite if UGA would have had to beat Texas a 3rd time in the playoff, this past season.
