This is going to be an ugly slugfest with a 65-63 type score. I am not getting a warm fuzzy on this one boss man

State isn't really that team this season. They're a better offensive team than defensive team (#19 offensive, #37 defense).
Their last few PPP defensive games against decent/good offenses
Tennessee - 1.11
Ole Miss - 1.09
Auburn - 1.24
Kentucky - 1.28
Torvik has it at 84-83 Alabama.

Reasons to feel good
1. State is 225th in sending folks to the line, we are 19th in getting there.
2. State is 247th in the 3pt conversions, we are 17th in opponents 3pt conversion
3. State is 222nd in defensive 3pt conversion, we shoot a lot of 3s
Reasons to feel bad
1. We can’t hit our GOTDAMN free throws
2. We don’t shoot the 3 great

I think we'll see a re-energized Sears and a different Cliff tonight. If we can play a clean game we should be in good shape. We need Grant to stop turning the ball over.

Agree - with all the Sears talk Grant's 30 minutes of absolute garbage was kind of washed over. He's now turned the ball over 14 times in the last 4 games. That's horrid for a big.

Even with Mark's troubles against LSU, we're slowly turning the corner shooting the ball. It feels like the right guys are taking shots more - and Youngblood is getting more involved and comfortable (36% 3P, 83% 2PT, 75% FT last 3 games).
Last 3 games
3PT - 28/79 (35.4%) (32.0% all games before) (+3.4%)
2PT - 65/113 (57.5%) (61.4% all games before) (-3.9%)
FT - 71/92 (77.2%) (69.7% all games before) (+7.5%)

Grant -- like too many players -- too often throws to a spot without looking for a defensive player waiting on that pass.
His other turnover issue is a harder fix. Oats wants him driving to the basket and he's just not that strong with the ball through traffic.
Sure they try to work on that with him since even in HS I remember the drills where you drove to the basket and everyone was instructed to hack the hell out of you on the way.

We also seem to have a high 3-pt floor. We don’t have many outright poor games from 3. Just a ton of mediocre ones. Maybe the result of several average guys having the green light

We seem to have finally settled into who should take shots in what situation roles and guys are comfortable with them
Holloway/Sears/Youngblood - just about whenever off a catch with leeway to take one of the dribble in the right rhythm/situation
Philon/Stevenson - in rhythm of a kick out pass
Mo/Sherrell - preferably never, but wide open off a kick out
Reid still kind of the wild card with the injury and Grant is more a "how is he feeling tonight" guy than a situational guy. If he's feeling his shot he's as good an off the dribble shooter as we have along with Mark. If he's not then no shots at all ever please.

We must find a way to limit Hubbard, and then pray to God that no one else has a career night against us. Happens all too often. I like us in a close one one the road.

quote:It's kind of bizarre how drastically he changed his shot from last year to this season, with basically no benefit from 3 (and a worse FT %). I've noticed the last few games that they've tweaked his new shot so he isn't bringing the ball so far back at his set point and it seems to be helping.

Wonder what will happen?

I tend to think -- with out any real evidence -- that defensive stats may be weighed a little high in Torvik, KenPom etc. . .
But even if it doesn't completely translate against the top tier teams, the way Houston can just absolutely suffocate some decent teams is pretty impressive.
They're up at West Virginia 39 -19 now and I watched some of their 70-35 win over Utah. Quite a few games where you get the feeling they could just roll the ball back the entire 2nd half and the lead's pretty safe.
