Sometimes I watch football, college and NFL, as well as all sports and I think, is this rigged? Pete rose got shite for betting but is logical to think he’s been and is the only one? There’s been a few called out and get suspended but it’s not common at all. Betting today is way easier to hide than calling your bookie. My dad said Bear Bryant bet on football with Georgia's coach, but as we all know the rich and mostly the powerful get away with things. I didn’t believe it until found this article. Hell, I forgot he basically pended the largest betting and dog racing track in the US. For example, holding in football happens on every play, just sometimes it’s not as bad or it’s just not called. But there are times it is called at that specific moment to affect games. Same with a DB chasing the receiver. PI happens on every play practically. I just feel even watching sports these days, not ALL the time, but a lot, there’s Vegas in the background shelling out huge amounts of money to people and teams, to lose, cover or take a fall. We can’t all believe this happens in Boxing alone.

What bothers me is the ESPN's, YouTube, pod cats and other major networks pump up naive bettors.

I think all mentions of gambling should be removed from sports coverage.

AMEN!!!
I started "betting on ball" at about 16 years old at one of the many poolhalls in the place I grew up. There was a bookie in just about everyone of them!
If a person has a compulsive nature, as I, then you are prime meat" for the addiction (I didn't say habit!) The urge carried over into cards, dice, and a multitude of other games of chance.
I'm not a stupid person, BUT my personality flaw was stronger than my good sense. Finally, after over 50 years of indulgence, believe it or not,, the entire idea of gambling just became tired, and old to me, and I put it down.
Fortunately for me, I was successful in the business I'd undertaken, and was able to retire in my 50s. But I was MUCH more the exception than the rule.
IMO, legalized and advertised gambling will approach alcohol and drug addiction as a monumental curse on our society. All I can say is "GOD HELP US!

I can’t help but to wonder how much poverty could be eliminated by taking the money that one might spend gambling and instead choosing to feed the poor.

You really should take what you read about that Butts/Bryant story with a massive grain of salt. I’m not saying those two men were necessarily above what they were accused of, but the ‘evidence’ presented was massively weak…as evidenced by the enormous libel verdicts found in their favor, against the paper. A random businessman in Atlanta was accidental connected on the call, chose to eavesdrop, and knew who was talking and what the frick was going on without any context? And then that guy sells his story to the paper? Could have happened, but that’s just a lot to take at face value.

Just keeping it 100, I've placed a wager or two in my lifetime and don't think anything is wrong with the act itself if you can do so responsibly, but even I think they've crossed the line with this — it's everywhere.

And there are those among us who unfortunately cannot control themselves.

IMO the proliferation of DraftKings, Fanduel, and other DFS-style apps are downright scary, and again I say this as someone who actually utilizes them regularly.

What is actual Evidence that many years ago? There were no cell phones, emails, etc.. etc.. people got away with shite often because of lack of evidence, and vice versa, charged with insufficient evidence. When I was younger lines crossing on the phone happened all the time. I could hear peoples conversations often. Who knows if it’s true, but my whole point is, people bet on sports, a lot of sports are rigged, and with NIL and distribution of money, don’t think for one second, players may be payed millions to drop a few balls for the opposing team.

You are one of the lucky ones with that type of personality to get out without it destroying your life.

You make some good points. I read an article not long about the increasing problem of compulsive gambling. The article used Australia as an example, which has the highest gambling rate in the world. 50% of adults there gamble weekly, with a majority being men. The average gambler in Australia (50+% of all adults) lost $871 last year - that's gambling losses of $18.3 BILLION for a country with a population not much larger than Florida.

Well, the world's leader in sports broadcasting also runs a betting company.

Some people can make a good living betting point spread movements. Just have to have a bookie that pays out and can handle the action

All week so and so is going to smoke so and so then all 5 experts pick x team and y wins.

It needs to be unhitched from the coverage. Just speak of the game and be honest.

I think I put in $60 in my Draftkings account this year. Better find some cheap food for those homeless.

$3-$5 parlays
Won a few, lost a lot.

I’ve lost maybe $300 total gambling on poker, in casinos, on games in my entire life. I tried it. Just never had much appeal to me. I came from modest means to get where I am and I never saw the point in parting with money for nothing.

Did you see the 2 personal fouls they called for Mahomes that were laughable? The NFL definitely wants the Chiefs in the Super Bowl.

Not a doubt in my mind that players on teams that are not playing for anything meaningful are influencing games

I used to think sports were sacred, but over the years, things start to feel… off. It’s hard to prove, but when you see questionable calls or performances, you can’t help but consider the money behind it. A friend of mine who bets occasionally also says half the fun is questioning narratives and ""fix theories,"" even if it’s just speculation.

On the topic of betting responsibly, I stick to light dabbling if I do it at all. I came across some cool options like free spins on OZWIN Casino, like the ones detailed in https://casinobonusco.com/free-spins-ozwin-100/. It’s low-stakes fun, and you can try it without worrying about losses piling up.
