Two stats - one depressing and one interesting regarding State (and Ole Miss

1. Mississippi State football has lost 12 consecutive SEC games -- all by double digits. That's hard to do. There isn't a win on the schedule next year so that will be 20 barring a huge upset (likely to be 10+ underdogs in all eight games). The record is 23, so 2026 schedule is important.
2. Mississippi State and Ole Miss play basketball Saturday and it will be the first time in history where both teams are ranked. With over 200 meetings, that seems statistically significant.

Not really depressing. We are the worst program historically in the conference for basketball and State is probably 11th or 12th

True, but both teams have had sustained success so it just seems odd that when meeting at least twice per season (and sometimes a third in SECT), there has never been a meeting where both teams were ranked. State tends to play its best basketball when the football team is terrible.
In the seasons where State has made the NCAA Tournament or won the SEC Championship, the preceding football record was:
1958: 3-6
1960: 2-6-1
1961: 5-5
1962: 3-6
1990: 5-6
1994: 8-4
1995: 3-8
2001: 3-8
2002: 3-9
2003: 2-10
2004: 3-8
2007: 8-5
2008: 4-8
2018: 8-5
2022: 9-4
2023: 5-7
2024: 2-10
So three times in the history of the damn university have we had a winning football season followed by an NCAA Tournament. One of those three was technically a First Four.

These concepts are connected by...your imagination.
If you are committed enough to athletics and create a good enough culture within the athletic department and campus, you can succeed in any and all sports.
Ask Florida.

I'm gonna catch downvotes for this, but the most mississippi thing is landing the pirate as your coach and then he dies unexpectedly.
The best turn in the world followed by a kick in the nuts.
Kiffin and Leach in the same state was a match made by the gods.

Weirdly one of those we were the only team to go to a bowl game, the NCAAs in basketball and something like the Supers or CWS in baseball.

All I know is both have good basketball teams this season.

State picked the absolute worst time to go back in the toilet in football. I don’t know how you look at next year’s schedule and find an SEC win. All your home games are against Top 15 teams and the maaaaybe winnable if all goes right games are all on the road.
State and OM never having a ranked vs ranked game in basketball before is crazy. I know historically these are not two of the top programs in the league. But both had enough success in the 90’s and early 2000’s to where I would’ve been sure it had happened before. Heck even Howland and Kermit both had good teams in 2019 that were ranked at times during the year, but didn’t have a game when both were ranked.
