Mbakwe and the economics of NIL

BOL is reporting that Mbakwe is likely leaving for a 7 figure NIL deal.
Props to Jalen on that, of course, but I believe now that we've hit the stage where a DB with 15 career tackles is worth that kind of a deal the acceleration toward a workable system will reach a breakneck speed.
There is no longer any economic scale between college football and the NFL, and that HAS to exist, or the whole way football is organized will have to be radically changed.

Hope he stays. He and Williams are friends.

It's Ole Miss

He's worth more to OIe Miss (multi-year starter, upside they need, etc) than he is to us right now (young backup high upside CB in a room with other backup high upside young CBs). It is what it is.
EDIT : Downvote away, but this is how allocation of resources works. Assuming Domani returns we have 2 locked in starting CBs with a host of other very talented and unproven guys behind them - 1 of which is Mbakwe. I'd love to hold on to him, but another contending program like Ole Miss - who has a big hole at CB - will look at him and see an immediate starter who they also have another year of control over. They are paying him for 25-26 games whereas we would be paying him for MAYBE 12-13. It's pretty simple.

Ole Myth is cleaning up in the portal again. No guarantee he'll get any PT over there.

You're right...unless him leaving somehow costs us Ryan Williams.

Yes and no. He’s worth more to them, but “it is what it is” shouldn’t be what the consumer is forced to stomach here.
No other sport on earth has both of these: no salary cap, no contracts
Beating a dead horse here, but if we’re going to have pay for play, which is what this is now, this has nothing to do with “NIL” these kids are being offered money to play football, then there has to be contracts. Even if they’re one year contracts, something has to go in writing. This isn’t what’s best for the industry itself or the kids. Think about the time and resources that go into recruiting and the trickle down effects each commit has.
Real Madrid can’t recruit Erling Haaland because he’s under contract at Man City. The Yankees can’t recruit Spencer strider because he’s under contract with Atlanta. My biggest gripe in all of this isn’t even the portal itself. At this point everyone in college football is “in the portal” if they can just be lured off an active roster with more money

People will cheat like hell if they put in a salary cap. They'll do the old brown bag again.
Needs to be done though.

Yea it sucks and it doesn't make any sense compared to other professional leagues/structures but it quite literally is what it is. And I don't trust that anybody will be making any changes that are positive anytime soon because nobody seems to have any idea how to mechanically get it done.
The structure is there is no structure, and so that means you have to make raw decisions based on your philosophy and what pieces are most important to you.

Wonder if this means Domani Jackson is coming back?

If he doesn't then this becomes a much bigger issue I'd say.

Hard for me to imagine Jackson returning, but maybe if we can get him a decent NIL package he will. He put a good season on tape.

He isn't worth it. Can't offer every athletic kid with who didn't start 1 million dollars. Wonder how the players on Ole Miss will feel about it.

For whatever reason there has been very little buzz about Domani in the draft process. He's definitely not in the top 5-7 group of CBs per pretty much everyone who does mock drafts. Does that mean his feedback from the league is the same? Who knows.

With Domani saying “ I am focused on UM right now”, I think it is likely he goes pro…. Hope not .

I would agree that the way that interview was framed also makes me think he's probably going.

That’s just it though. There’s no guarantee Domani will be back. JB was the other corner that was rotating in for meaningful snaps. If Domani went pro JB was going to start. Sorry just my opinion but losing him is a big deal. No spinning this. I don’t think Alabama can keep up in this era of NIL.

Well, then I guess it's time to prepare for disappointment then?

Maybe so. Guess time will tell.

I think that we can keep up but I think we realize that you can't buy a team and have to be smart with where you spend your money. With all the portal guys Ole Miss got last year Kiffin should've at least had them in the playoffs.
