Why Is Everyone So Down on Keelon Russell?

Apparently I'm the only person on this board who thinks he has a great chance to come in and start as a Freshman.

Let's understand something: Keelon Russell won the Elite 11. He could very well be the best QB in a class that is loaded at the QB position.

Michigan just paid $10 million for Underwood, and Keelon is probably better.

LSU was planning on B Underwood coming in and immediately taking Nussmeier's job, and improving their team.
Why are we not thinking the same thing?

Keelon has future Heisman winner written all over him. He's the best QB we've landed since Bryce Young and will CRUSH it in this offense.
How does no one see this? We're so fricking lucky that he's coming here, and yet no one seems to really give a shite, outside of "Well maybe he'll start in year 3"

Keelon is the biggest recruit (and probably most expensive) we've landed in the NIL era so far.

Everyone's stuck on this "We've got 3 backups that are all amazing, but the coaches refuse to play them" bullshite

Bryce Young is going to beat out Mac Jones.

People can flame away, but I really think there's a sense among some folks that since in their eyes he's been treated unfairly, Ty Simpson has to get his shot at being No. 1, regardless.

I haven't heard anyone here being down on Keelon. He seems to be a great prospect. It's just unrealistic to expect a true freshman to immediately beat out QB's that have been in the program for multiple years. He may be ready to play right away, but he's an outlier if he is able to do that.

If Ty Simpson turns out to be as good as Mac Jones, I'll be thrilled.

The difference being Mac Jones was stuck behind Tua Tagovailoa. Ty Simpson has been unable to beat out Jalen Milroe. Bit of a difference there

This isn't just any Freshman. This is like if CJ Stroud, Bryce Young, or Jayden Daniels were coming in.

Also, we're currently experiencing some of the worst QB play at Alabama I've ever seen. Saban tried to hit the transfer portal prior to 2023 to find somebody better than what we had, because he knew that Simpson and Milroe were trash

The best QB should play. Period. Regardless of who he is and what class he’s in.

I think it’s quite unfair to call Simpson trash.

Not in 2020 when Bryce came in as a TF. It was an open competition between him and Mac. Everyone believed that Bryce would beat Mac out

How can anyone disagree with this?

Saban was so desperate for another option at QB, he took Tyler Buchner, and put him ABOVE Ty Simpson (yes the same Ty Simpson that everyone believes is the next Joe Montana)

What if we have 3 backups that are all mediocre D1 QBs, and thats why none of them have been able to separate?

Is that too reasonable of an explanation?

I think Austin Mack may have something, but he still needs to develop more. The rest are totally mediocre .

At least Jalen Milroe has SOMETHING special about him with his 4.4 speed. No one else we have is remarkable in any way, and that's why Milroe continues to start.

Are you kidding me? Hell I am ecstatic that he is coming and hope he gets the reigns early

Everyone is seemingly giving up on Mack, the guy Deboer brought to Alabama. I’d say Lonergan transfers and the competition will be between Simpson and Mack next spring unless we have another Jalen Hurts situation where Russell just seems that much better.

Bama will be in serious trouble if a true freshman is the starting QB

I'm not "giving up on Mack" but yeah I'm more excited about a QB coming in that's worth $10 million than I am about some unheralded backup QB.

Ask any top program in the nation who they'd rather have, Austin Mack, Ty Simpson, or Keelon Russell - every single one would take Keelon and it wouldn't even be a decision. That's why I'm so confused why our fanbase seems to be totally unexcited about the guy

Stroud and Bryce didn’t start as TF. And Daniels struggled as a TF

I do think he’s very talented but there’s very limited examples of TF starting QBs have tons of success THAT year for a reason

Was that the same guy who already knew Rees' offense? That's crazy a sr transfer who already knows the new offense was blindly shown any level of preference.
