Despite winning the SEC title, the Gators were barred from going to the 1985 Sugar Bowl due to the violations committed under Pell; runner-up LSU went in their place.[21] On May 30, 1985, the presidents of the ten SEC-member universities voted 6–4 to vacate the Gators' 1984 SEC title and declared the team ineligible for the SEC championship during the upcoming 1985 and 1986 seasons because of the rule violations committed under Pell. The retroactive vacating of the 1984 championship, six months after the 1984 football season ended, drew an angry response from University of Florida president Marshall Criser, as well as Gators coaches, players and fans due to the retroactive nature of the decision and its perceived unfairness.

Florida would again top the conference standings in 1985 but had been declared ineligible for the SEC championship before the season began

Florida led the SEC in both points scored (31 points per game) and points allowed (15.5 points per game). The balanced offense featured freshman quarterback and SEC Player of the Year Kerwin Bell, three running backs who would be NFL first round draft picks in John L. Williams, Neal Anderson, and Lorenzo Hampton, and another future first round pick in freshman wide receiver Ricky Nattiel. The offensive line was dubbed "The Great Wall of Florida" and featured several all-conference lineman, including yet another future first round pick in tackle Lomas Brown, helping Florida lead the conference in rushing with 240 yards per game. The defense featured two consensus all-conference players in noseguard Tim Newton and linebacker Alonzo Johnson

BYU winning it that year is pretty much a joke, but shouldn't it be Washington not Florida?

Because UF was considered the best team and most talented going into the bowls, I guess.
That team is the only team from '84 considered an all-time great team.

That's not when the season is over by 1984. National championships were awarded after the bowl games then.

That's why I said the UF admin were stupid to elect NOT to play in the Orange Bowl
Still there were pubs who crowned them national champs and they were considered the best of that year.

Im not saying they were nationall champs, just saying they were a great team that some pubs still crowned champs despite not playing a bowl

Read the post above...I'm not saying they were national champs.
My point was the media thought highly of them despite not playing the bowl.

Publications or selectors that declared NCs back then like NYT and TSN .

Florida has been named national champion by NCAA-designated "major selectors" in two additional years, 1984 and 1985. Partially because the football program was on NCAA probation in the mid-1980s, the university has never claimed a share of the national championship for either season.

Interesting quote from UW player in '84

All lobbying was proven moot. The Huskies finished No. 2 in both polls. The AP poll had a slim margin — 1,160 points for BYU and 1,140 points for Washington, the Huskies receiving 16 first-place votes to BYU’s 38. Not since the 1961 season had the final poll offered such little delineation between No. 1 and No. 2.

Beating Oklahoma, it turned out, wasn’t enough. At least a few players were sure it would be.

“I assumed that because we lost to USC, we would have to split it with Florida,” linebacker Joe Kelly said. “Never did it cross my mind that they would give BYU a national championship. That wasn’t even on my radar.

Charlie Pell was a cheatin' POS.

He set the sheep humping sister banging taterheads on their path with their first national championship. He honestly taught them how to cheat.

They’re Florida fans, they’re new to all this football stuff.

Saved By the Bell has more tradition than UF.

Wow!

I thought it would never happen with Spurrier around. He loathed all those teams of the 80's and while I didn't completely disagree with his position, I didn't completely agree with it either. Yes they cheated. But there were many other teams doing the same. I know that is no excuse, but there have been other teams who have won championships while on probation. Spurrier was always pissed because his first team in 1990 won the SEC and couldn't claim it because we were on probation from previous years.

Florida got hammered by the NCAA and then the SEC presidents got together and penalized us even more, which has never been done before or since. It is about time for these guys to at least be recognized by UF if no one else, and I think we need to go ahead and give us 3 more SEC titles for '84, '85, and '90.
