1944 was the last time Alabama played an in-state school not named Auburn

There's no point in playing those teams.

Alabama plays Ohio State and Oklahoma State out of conference in 2028.
That North Alabama game should be a blast on the plains though

sure there is - it keeps money in state.
LSU has done a fantastic job of playing the in state football programs over the years.

It's not Alabama's prerogative to subsidize tier 3 athletic programs in the state. There's nothing to gain for Alabama.
Y'all can sing kumbaya with the rest of the little siblings. I'm sure there was a sigh of relief that it wasn't Jacksonville State coming to town again

what is there to gain paying Mercer, Eastern Illinois, UT Martin, etc?

Would Auburn continue to exist if Alabama stopped playing the Iron Bowl? Beating Alabama is all Auburn lives for.

Does it really make a difference though (even supposing the University was so opposed to a school in Kentucky or Louisiana getting paid).
Instead of playing Alabama, isn't Troy St getting pretty much the same payday to play at Georgia or LSU instead?
If Auburn was playing AT North Alabama I could see this logic. Otherwise, it seems the "state" makes more money if fans have to travel there and stay in hotels and eat out and maybe take a couple of extra vacation days in the area.

Sure, if the "state" owns gas stations, hotels, restaurants, etc.....
Do you think in-state schools make more money playing in-state? Logic tells me......yes.

If a school like LSU is going to pay $600,000 to a FCS program to come into Tiger Stadium for a game I applaud them for scheduling FCS programs within the state of Louisiana to give that money to.

UAB was a real threat recently
They tried to kill the program for good

I have contended for years that UGA should keep their cupcake games in-state as much as possible.
Georgia State, KSU, Georgia Southern, Georgia Tech
Not at the expense of big games like Clemson or Oregon, but if you are going to get a cupcake or two, keep it in state.

Incorrect.
Alabama played Alabama Polytechnic Institute till they changed their name to Auburn University in the 1960s

If the "state" and cities of Alabama don't tax those things, they should probably start since all the other states are doing so.

Of course, the bottom line for the school itself depends on the payout. I have no idea if, say, LSU pays Troy St the same thing Alabama pays Western Kentucky but I imagine it's pretty close.
The school spends more the farther the team travels. But does Troy State negotiate a little more from Oklahoma -- game out of the near SEC footprint -- for that? I really don't know.
People always repeat the "pay the instate schools" but there's always more "it's just common sense" type statements about it than a consideration of the whole economic picture.
If I were the mayor of Auburn, for example, I'd sure want Auburn home games to be bringing people from farther away so they spent more money locally as opposed to driving up from Andalusia and leaving right after the game.
There's also this tendency to act like Troy State doesn't get paid by Alabama so they have to play Alabama State for roasted peanuts revenue instead.
