Finebaum says naming the field after Nick Saban is an insult to Nick Saban

And I tend to agree.

quote:

The SEC Network analyst called the decision to name field Saban Field “underwhelming.”

“It shouldn’t be Nick Saban Field,” Finebaum said. “It should be Bryant-Saban Stadium.”

His point is that no one talks about going to Pat Dye Field at Jordan-Hare Stadium, Steve Spurrier Field at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium or Vince Dooley Field at Sanford Stadium.

“Fields are worthless,” Finebaum said. “... That is window dressing.

quote:

“For the life of me, I don’t understand why the University of Alabama is so stubborn. I don’t think this is that great a tribute to Saban. I think it is somewhat of an insult to put him below (Paul) Bryant and (George) Denny. Denny has Denny Chimes. It may be the most iconic thing on the Alabama campus.”

Alabama, he said, missed a chance on sending a strong message.

“You put Bryant’s and Saban’s names on the stadium, you’re telling the world we had the two greatest football coaches in the history of college football at one school.”

This is the kind of shite that annoys me to be 100% honest. It's the same kind of shite people did after Bear died.

Tribute this, tribute that, what bear would have wanted, what Bear would have done, blah blah blah.

I agree with him. I don't know who started the knee jerk reaction to name the field (did it have a name before?), but it wasn't thought through.

We have literally the 2 greatest coaches in the history of the sport...advertise it.

It should be Bryant-Saban Stadium.

The stadium was renamed Bryant-Denny in 1975, while he was still head coach and a full seven years before he retired. And it's also not about what Saban wants or doesn't want. This is about the university properly honoring him for 17 seasons, 206 wins, and six national championships.

Doesn't matter. No one will ever have more buildings named after them then Richard Shelby.

I agree Saban-Bryant stadium rolls off the tongue easier than Bryant-Saban stadium

And I agree with Paul here.

Also…No offense to Bear Bryant, but Saban is clearly a better coach than him IMO.

Ought to name the University after him...maybe even Tuscaloosa. From all accounts outside of football he did a bunch of good things for both. The bastard LOL...

I wonder would Aggie, considering they've already named the field, possibly name it Kyle Field at Jimbo Stadium.

Agree 100%. And complaints about Dr. Denny's name being included are just ignorant, it's hard to overstate his importance to UA and the Athletic Department (he was known around campus & referred to as "Coach"). He hired Wade and Thomas and built the Tide into a national power as much, if not more than anyone.

Naming the field after him comes across as weak and piddly. He deserves something more substantial, recognizable and prominent.

I suspect the one thing Bear Bryant would have wanted more than anything on earth is another fall on the sidelines in Tuscaloosa...tributes are like funerals, they are for the living.

I live by the motto that it’s dangerous to name something after someone who is still alive. They might still do something to discredit it.

That said, anybody heard of Shield-Watkins field except UT fans?

Denny is a former president and has his name on Denny Chimes. Not sure why he needs his name on the football stadium as well.

I said this before in another thread but the field used to be named after Denny. It would have made a ton of sense to name the field after Denny and call the stadium Bryant-Saban stadium. Jmo

I don't care about the renaming, I'm talking about the petty bullshite to the point where having a field named after you is somehow an insult.

Not sure how to explain it exactly, but people get dumb with this stuff.
