I believe his 30 for 30 title sums it up.

The greatest that never was, hence the name of the documentary.

never understood why the Sip or MSU were never in the running for Dupree… seems he enrolled at Southern Miss but never played

If you read Willie Morris' book (MS native, U Texas grad, Ole Miss prof) he talks about that.

Ole Miss was never in it. They were still stigmatized by racial issues in the early '80s.

Miss State was in it... but they weren't big time enough.

Southern Miss was actually a really strong program back then... but they were basically in it because Dupree's "advisor" Ken Fairley wanted him to go there.

Effectively, Dupree was a clone of Herschel and Bo except that he had a larger frame than either of them. Defenders couldn't wrap him up because he was so large. He was also a bit smoother than those guys and he had great vision. But he wasn't as violent or as competitive as Herschel and Bo.

Ironically, Adrian Peterson was like those guys but he was a smaller frame than those three guys. A little more twitchy and not quite the vision.

The only guy I've seen in decades that reminds me of those three early '80s guys is Derrick Henry. And of the three Henry reminds me most of Dupree.

In essence, Derrick Henry is what Marcus Dupree should have been.

Didn't Barry Switzer buy Dupree's mother a doublewide?

He would have been the best RB ever at OU. Better than Sims, AD, anyone. Easy Top 3 all time CFB RB. can’t really rank him because of what happened.

Marcus was incredible. If he'd only had a decent male role model in his life.

Probably the best pure running back I've ever seen.

Pure athletic ability? Best RB that anybody has ever seen. His size and speed has never even been approached by anybody else.

Dupree could run over you. Run around you. Run away from you.

Had he not let an 'advisor' get in head. He might have been the greatest running back that ever played the game.

When you watch these highlights...remember that he was 18 years old when they were filmed.

Southern Philadelphia kid. He never would have survived BAMA coaches and discipline, regardless of how we tend to look at him. He chose wisely.

I remember waiting in line to get into the 2013 sugar bowl against Bama, and noticing Dupree just a few people behind me. I was trying to explain to my boys then what an incredible running back he used to be. I was a little taken back to see him waiting in line with the rest of us schmoes.

He did not work out and got fat.

His naturally ability carried him so far so long that he didn't put in the effort to be great. Switzer probably should have been more positive (baby him), but he tried to make him tougher.

A D came to OU as a freshman with the work effort of a walkon. He was top in the nation, but worked like he was not.

Very sad for Dupree in what he COULD have been, but most of us think we know things at 18 that we realize we did not when we reach 30.
