They declined to "bid" once the player came back asking for more.
That pretty much backs up his statement.
They were originally interested in the player, it became clear that he wanted an obscene amount of money, they backed out and said they weren't interested in players who are just looking for "a big bag."
Texas also backed out for the same reason at the same time, according to their insiders.
Explaining the process of getting outbid does not change the fact you got outbid.
I use to go to car auctions all the time with my dad back in the day. He would bid on cars to the amount he thought they were worth and then he would stop. If someone OUTBID his offer, then whatever bring on the next car. He was looking for a good bargain, not that cherry 1969 Camaro at the Barrett-Jackson auction.
But he didn't go home and then pretend like he didn't bid on the cars that someone else paid more for, or act like the process was beneath him or that he was looking for anything other than a bargain.

"I mean, we were second in recruiting last year," Saban told the audience. "A&M was first. A&M bought every player on their team -- made a deal for name, image, likeness. We didn't buy one player, all right? But I don't know if we're gonna be able to sustain that in the future because more and more people are doing it. It's tough."
Was this bullshite when Saban said it?

Why did Saban retire? He didn't want to deal with all that. Brian Kelly is now going to be next if he refuses to deal with it and his team will fall farther behind in the near future.

I don't think anyone ever said LSU didn't get outbid, you seem hung up on that for some reason.
No one is saying LSU wasn't interested in the player or that they weren't willing to pay him either.
Kelly is just saying he isn't interested in paying a ridiculous amount or getting in bidding wars for a player that isn't worth the price, I'm sure your dad would've said the same thing about the cars he bid on.
He never said he was against paying players, instead he's actually said the opposite.

What he said was "We're not in the market of buying players."
What everyone else is pointing out is that he most definitely IS in the market of buying players. He just thought the price was too high. That's very different than saying you're not in the market at all.
It's kind of a false virtue signaling where you don't have the virtue you are signaling you have at all.
His issue isn't with buying players. It's with the price they charged.

If you read the entire quote, he's equating "buying players" to simply throwing money at players to come to your school. Think Texas A&M in 2022 with their high school class or Ole Miss this year through the portal.
That's different from offering a competitive NIL package like schools such as Alabama, Georgia, and Ohio State. Those schools may not offer the most, but players still go there because they see the big picture.
Versus going to Miami or somewhere because you got paid.

You got to also remember it's more fluid than ever to become elite. Miami is already putting together top 10 high school recruiting classes. If this portal class puts them in the playoff this upcoming season it will be worth it for them and they will only heighten their profile for the best high school players a la Georgia. I can say the same about Ole Miss.
Lastly, I don't think Miami has to outbid anyone. They do seemingly have unlimited funds but they also are selling living in Miami.

No doubt, but LSU still theoretically has the advantage in these areas.
All schools are paying players, I don't know if anyone disputes that.
Some are throwing a lot of money at talented players to overcome their deficiencies in other areas, this is what Kelly is referring to by "buying players."

What areas does LSU have the theoretical advantage?

Talent, facilities, recent success

That was before Alabama formed it's collective and in fact was probably the reason it was formed.

Facilities mean little due to NIL. This is why Ole Miss pivoted and stopped putting funds to a stadium refurbishment and put the funds toward NIL. Miami at their greatest never had great facilities.
Talent. In-state recruiting is going to be tougher now b/c paying players has always existed but with NIL the pay is more b/c there's more transparency. Honestly, at this point, both Miami and Ole Miss have more talented rosters than LSU.
Recent success. There's some significance for this b/c it means a lot especially if a guy can play in a certain scheme or with certain players.

Alabama introduced an NIL collective over a month before Saban made those comments.

I mean who the hell wants to deal with a player, the parents and the pimp agent on an auction block?

I disagree.
He was virtue signaling. He was trying to promote the idea that unlike those other evil programs, LSU doesn't pay money for their players. The players at LSU are all there because they love LSU.
And that's pure BS. LSU does pay players. Kelly was trying to promote a completely false narrative to try to excuse misses in the portal.
An accurate statement would have been: "Yeah, we didn't sign any portal DL. They wanted more than we were willing to give them."
He didn't say that though. He went with a holier-than-thou approach that was completely untrue. It's unsurprising that fans of other teams are calling him out on that.

If you're just outright buying players, then I agree.
Great facilities still mean something if you're taking the approach that schools like Georgia, Ohio State, and LSU are taking.

Absolutely no way.
LSU was at #7 in the 2023 Team Talent Composite, Miami was at #12, Ole Miss was at #23.
Impossible to make up that much of a difference in one offseason.
Overall 247 Composite Recruiting Rankings for 2024 (transfers and recruits):
6. Miami
9. LSU
17. Ole Miss

Except he's literally spoke in favor of paying players before. He's even said he was in favor of exploring profit sharing.

Ole Miss and Miami have better DLs than LSU, better secondaries than LSU, I'll give LSU a slight edge on OL over both schools but Miami and Ole Miss have really good OLs, Cam Ward and Jaxon Dart have proven more at this time as college QBs than Nuss, LSU has better WRs than Miami but not Ole Miss, I think Ole Miss and Miami have better RBs than LSU. Ole Miss and Miami might be a wash with LSU at LB.
I don't know if you've ever seen him play but Miami's Reuben Bain is a better DL than anyone in the SEC save maybe Walter Nolen.
