I remembered watching LSU play the aggies in Baton Rouge when RC Slocum was the coach of the aggies. I went with my grandpa to the game. My grandpa knew some of Slocum's family and told me stories about them. Probably why I remember the game. I went and looked it up. LSU first played aggies in 1899 and played 62 times. The series was a home and home from the time period you mentioned from 1986-1995 when aggies had Jackie Sherrill and later RC Slocum as their head coaches. LSU was 4-6 in that series with A&M winning the last five games. Then LSU cancelled the series and owed several hundred thousand dollars to the aggies for cancelling.

So hardly the huge disadvantage that it’s been made out to be. When you consider the rise and fall of programs through the years, sometimes a bottom 8 team may be a tougher opponent than a top 8 team (looking at you, Tennessee).

Ultimately, I agree. The perms do make a little bit of a difference, but it isn't that big of a deal. Imo, it's more important to play the games that need to be played.

TN Schedule as an example
Y1/3
Alabama, Georgia, Texas, LSU, Auburn
Miss State, South Carolina, Kentucky, Vanderbilt

Y2/4
Alabama, Florida, Oklahoma, A&M
Ole Miss, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Vanderbilt

vs

Y1/3
Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma, LSU, Auburn
Miss State, South Carolina, Kentucky, Vanderbilt

Y2/4
Alabama, Florida, Oklahoma, Texas, Texas A&M
Ole Miss, Arkansas, Missouri, Vanderbilt

It really boils down to 2 games.
Oklahoma 2 vs 4
Kentucky 4 vs 2

The rest of the schedule is identical. Is that different? Probably, but both schedules are hard as shite. One is just probably a little bit harder. It isn't something to get all crazy about imo.

But the catch to that was Tn. was considered a "bottom 8" team...giving them 2 upper & 1 lower teams.
& those 3 teams (Aub., LSU, & Tn.) were/are the 3 Ala. played yearly...so what was the issue?

Either way, your 3 permanent opponents are not nearly as big an affect on your schedule as the permanent opponent is now.

And 9 game is so much more entertaining. Give us quality football, not exhibitions.

See, that's the problem I hear.

People complain about the extra game loss, but they see playing Scrub U helping their schedule.

But then, at the end of the season, is "you didn't play anybody" comments...caused by playing Scrub U.

There is definitely a science to it.. but some teams are happy to be bowl eligible. and some teams want to make the playoffs.. and some teams just want the payday. This separation will eventually cause teams to breakaway and form a new league. No idea if that will be a good thing or a bad thing, but I do think it is coming..

I agree. I've seen many YouTube vids about all this.

My personal confusion is why the strive to be bowl eligible, but not want to make the better bowls & playoffs.
