Pretty decent officiating in the game but...

How on earth do you miss a roughing the punter call as plain as day as that was?
Had that incident been the other way around, those announcers would have harped on it all game long.

The officials seemed to pretty much decide they weren't going to impact the game and that meant not calling anything unless it was egregious. I think they called one live-ball penalty the whole game, the obvious block in the back on their WR.

In a regular game, Burton getting pulled on the third down play probably results in a first down for holding or PI, but it's hard to complain because we had a couple non-calls go our way too.

The catch by Burton at the end zone also had a pi that wasn't called. Should have been 1st and goal.

I think the missed roughing the kicker was pretty egregious!

Yeah I thought that the officiating was pretty good, they let them play. The running into the kicker was absolutely bogus though, and would have wiped the ensuing TD drive off the board, and possibly given us more points. Was potentially a 10-14 point swing.

I don't know. I see that go both ways. Sometimes the slightest contact gets called and sometimes it has to be the guy getting wiped out to get called. I thought it was a penalty for sure, but I also thought Arnold slinging down McCarthy well out of bounds was a penalty. It went both ways.

agree…I wasn’t as bad as I was expecting it to be.
But I’ve never seen a more obvious “look the other way” no call on a kicker.

IMO, if you are tackling a guy in bounds and it carries to out of bounds, no penalty.

It didn't even have to be called roughing the kicker. Running into would have been sufficient because it was just a 4th and 4. Roughing can be a judgment call but the Michigan player objectively ran into Burnip. Not sure how that was missed.

At a minimum it should have been a 5 yard running into the kicker penalty. which still would have given us a first down.

Our punter's leg was hit before it came back to the ground, causing him to hit the turf. It was a perfect example of why the 5 yard penalty exists in addition to the 15 yard roughing the kicker. It may not have been as severe a hit, but you absolutely must protect the punter.

Eh we were not doing anything with the ball at that point of the game anyway

Don’t think officiating was a deciding factor at all in the game but that miss was mindblowing. Even if the refs were in “let them play” mode, that was just a blatant penalty. How refs can sometimes just stare right at obvious penalties and not throw a flag while also being ticky tack elsewhere is really puzzling.

For sure. It’s refreshing to come away from a big game knowing refs didn’t play a major role.
