Discussion idea…
Do bowl games outside of the playoffs matter?
Do they matter less after the 12 team playoff?
Should they help or hurt the perception of a coaching staff in not in the playoffs?
I’ve struggled with this bowl game situation for a few years. A lot of folks judged Gus harshly over bowl losses. I struggle with it with in the fan base because of the portal and players sitting out to protect draft status and also eligibility for young players. No doubt some teams could go into bowl games with 45-50 players now and in the future.
Maybe I’m looking for someone to make me care more than just another win on the record for a bowl game.

Unfortunately- for me- bowl games outside of the playoff don’t mean anything in the way they used to. Hell- there are only 2 games on New Year’s Day anymore.
I guess for underclassmen it means more practice or whatever- but it’s barely a reward anymore in the way becoming “bowl eligible” used to mean.
Now, I’m not on the chamber of some mid sized city that likes the $20 M in tourism- I’m only speaking as a fan.
I say no. Bowls are sort of obsolete in so many ways from having prestige or meaning. They mainly are the last grasp of what a season was before the long offseason.
Unfortunately- I miss the old days of college football. Even if it was rigged or had no clear winner- at least an 8-4 or 9-3 season didn’t feel like a total disappointment.

In our case, a bowl game matters. We did not get to go to a bowl at all last year. The year before that we went to the toilet bowl and lost. A bowl game brings the opportunity for a few additional practices and our team really needs those.

A bowl game is nothing special.
Couldn’t ever figure out why people pointed to his bowl record. Just another game added on to his record.
They’ve never mattered to me though.

No… unless you lose

Does my 9 holes of golf after work matter?
It’s not a major championship, but anyone who competes at any sport wants to do their best.
The bowl games matter to a competitor. Everything a man of character does matters.
I agree it’s different than the good ole days, but at the Camellia Bowl I attended a few years ago it looked like every coach and player for Georgia Southern and Eastern Michigan gave their all. I’m glad they played that “meaningless” game. Tyler Bass kicked a 50 yard FG to end the first half. As time was running out Georgia Southern converted a 4th and 13 to set up a game winning FG by Bass.

I’ve started paying closer attention to many of the smaller schools during bowl season. They’re usually pretty competitive, most seniors last football game they’ll ever play. I still enjoy bowl season and having games on most nights through the holidays.
They probably don’t matter much. But then I remember top 10 pick Derrick Brown playing in his last one and think it must mean something.

Bowl games don’t matter to decision makers.
