LSU is in that grey area. They have the name brand and fanbase and proved last year that they can pull the upset against the big boys on occasion.
I'll preface what I'm going to say by saying that I cheer for LSU most of the time. Any enemy of Auburn is a friend of mine. That being said, LSU's problem is recruiting. Go look at the last 5 years of recruiting classes for UGA and Bama. Then look at LSU's classes the last 5 years. Unless they can start bringing in a whole slew of 4 and 5 star recruits, mainly in the trences, they'll always struggle to reach the top, like everyone else. UGA and Bama win because while most teams are celebrating getting one 4 or 5 star WB or RB, we celebrate getting five 4 or 5 star OL or DLinemen. That's the difference. Can Kelly get them to that level?...I dunno, you tell me?

Same time LSU has there's.

Of course!!!

And why is that???

Because year in and year out, both Bama and LSU realize that this is likely to be their toughest game!!!

There is no way LSU should be lumped in with the "rest of the SEC".

But whatever.

Sort of with you. Not sure what they're waiting for. Rumors were flying yesterday... then started getting backtracked.

I think you are assuming too much. It has really only been a couple of years with transfer portal and wholesale using of NIL in recruiting, and you are already seeing several big name recruits choosing other schools, even with big name offers.

With a 12 team playoff, many of these schools can now say you don't have to chose between a lot of money and a chance to be at the top of the sport as well; there is a much more solid chance for both now.

Not to mention, the stockpiling of talent through creative recruitment math is just going to become more and more difficult as more guys will transfer rather than sitting third or even second of the depth chart.

If CFB can keep 4 robust conferences, then I think we are about to see a new era of better parity. However, capitalist pigs being what they are, the SEC and B1G will likely try to blow that up and CFB will end up being just a minor league for the NFL.

Everything you're saying could be true. Most of what I said is rooted in the theory that games are won in the trenches. The portal has made it easy to get some disgruntled 4 or 5 star spoiled punk QB that is unhappy with lack of playing time to come to your school and possibly lead them to glory. And I'm not saying that isn't significant. Cam Newton, Tim Tebow and Herschel Walker proved that one great player can carry a team. BUT...the reason teams like UGA, Bama and Ohio St are consistently good is that while the Texas Tech's, Ole Misses, Oklahoma States and North Carolina States of the college football world are reaching for these flash-in-the-pan stars, they are recruiting half a dozen 4 or 5 star OL and DLinemen that are 320+ lbs, can already bench press the team bus and squat the freakun stadium. After a couple of years in our S&C program with state of the art facilities, they become Godzilla lining up against some 3 star Oline recruit from Po-dunkville USA that weighs 280. Who's gonna win that battle? Games are won in the trenches. As long as the elite keep recruiting the trench stars and developing them, the portal isn't going to affect that much. That's just my humble opinion. But what do I know?...I'm a chaplain in a hospice agency, so I'm certainly no expert. Things could change.
