Stolen from MSB. Read Thread Here

Apparently it is a technique that is taught to get larger, stronger runners than the tackler on the ground by pulling the runner's hips down with the tackler's weight, sometimes resulting in the tackler's body laying onto the runner's legs.

Just go ahead and add the flag belts to the uniforms.

I agreed on the horse collar rule, It’s a wonder McFadden had any knees left. It was painful to watch.I
I could see the hip-drop causing injury but when your tackling someone in the moment up close it can be unintentional. That’s tackling.

I'm still trying to figure out why jumpimg over offensive linemen to block a kick is illegal but two guys running full blast at each other, the one with the ball can jump over the one trying to tackle him is okay.

Football is inherently a dangerous sport. The athletes know it when they start playing at a young age.
And to say this technique is "taught" is complete horse shite. Just because you give it some stupid arse name akin to "horse collar" doesn't mean it's a well known take down technique in the octagon.
Shut down pulling guards
Take off the pads
Put on the flags and red jerseys.

I’m trying to figure out why blind side hits are illegal as it never used to be and makes football more elite of a contact sport.

Still require pads and helmets because you can never be too safe.

I’m generally a Neanderthal when it come to football. Still think facemasks are for pussies. But that tackle makes me cringe, even when it’s my team making it. Wouldn’t mind it disappearing from the game, tbh.

But weirdly still not a flag to do it to a QB.

There’s no playmaking difference between taking out some of the guy’s brain cells and just getting in his way to allow your runner to go past. Seems like a pretty reasonable rule change.

Sure there is. Sometimes it's necessary to make the play happen.
And this is a shitty subjective penalty.

So...what's supposed to be a legal tackle?

I'm still trying to figure out how using someone's shoulder pads (without reaching inside their collar) to make a tackle is too dangerous, but clotheslining them across the throat is okay.

fricking pathetic just turn it into flag football

I would like to know why the running back can lower the crown of his helmet into a defenders head but the defense gets ejected when they do the same thing.

How about both NFL and college get away from fake grass first.

At the end of the day the powers that be have to come to the conclusion that it’s a rough arse sport and you get hurt playing it.
Period.
The inherent nature of the sport is dangerous and you can hurt yourself playing it.

Isn’t this more rugby-style tackling or the “Hawk Tackle” technique that’s designed to get the head behind the point of contact?
You go tackler’s outside shoulder to ball carrier’s near hip and roll.

Honestly, having played the game well into my 20s at a high level, the hip drop tackle should have been banned two decades ago, well after my time ... especially in the trenches.
Also, I'm of the belief that targeting the knees should be banned as well.
I was a 6'3" 220 pound linebacker ... we didn't hip tackle in those days. It wasn't taught, it wasn't acceptable.
These days there are are safeties my size running 4.5s ... it's insane. Human knees are not built to take those shots, especially literally.
It's time to change some things before the game is completely destroyed by catastrophic lower body injuries.
(ETA: Tempted to downvote? Read the entire thread.)
