On Wednesday, the NCAA Division I Council formally removed the annual limit on initial counters, which limited FBS programs to signing 25 high school and junior college players and FCS programs to 30.
The rule was put in place in 2011 as a response to Ole Miss (among others) signing 37 players in its 2009 class.

Moving forward, FBS programs now simply must be at or below 85 scholarship players by the opening of training camp. If coaches want to bring in 85 new players from season to season, the NCAA rule book won't stop them.

It’s basically been that way the past couple of years since covid guess they are just making it permanent and back like it used to be. Just be at 85 or below.

Yep, since 2022 it was temporarily suspended, and now it's permanent.

I dont mind this rule change. It is needed with the transfer portal being so instrumental in roster management

The way we keep rolling back rules and repeating history, I'll give it 2 years before there's a serious push to also abolish the 85 scholarship limit and have no limit at all

What is the trend on scholarship counters these days?
Are there still 4 year scholarships?
Or are they always one year.
Why would you give 4 year scholarships when anybody can easily be replaced.

Scholarships are on a yearly basis.

So when i see that coaches are suggesting to players to look around the scholarship may be involved.

Was kinda my thought. Are more coaches gonna go Prime and kick everyone off and start over?

Maybe so. It does seem like the players advocates have been quiet lately while cheering for the Colorodo (checks notes...Buffs). I wonder how that works.
I guess we gave all them NIL monies just so coaches can retain supreme in the end.

I can see a college players' union on the horizon.

That will most likely be my exit if not before, because you know it's coming.

Great change. In the current environment, with transfers as they are, if you have a coaching change or something like that and lose a bunch of your roster to the portal, that rule made it a challenge to catch back up. Was limiting in a bad way.

My brother confirmed my nephew did get one, but I learned he already has a ford f150 platinum through NIL, and his wife will get this Dodge.
What a time to be a college football player.
