I was under the impression that the reason to add new teams to a conference was to "extend the footprint" and "bring in new markets" and jargon like that.

Adding Clemson and Florida State is adding the podunk South Carolina Upstate market and bringing the podunk Florida panhandle into the footprint. The SEC was already in South Carolina and Florida. I've spent a lot of time in both places. The panhandle is basically pine trees and airbrush tee shirts, and the Upstate is basically Anderson and Greenville lol.

I'm seriously asking what the point is because I can't figure it out.

brand is all that matters
what will bring the eyeballs
it doesn’t matter if a team is in a city with 100 million people if no one watches them play

then again, you already knew that

are you seriously this bored?

What the frick does "brand" even mean? Seriously. Can you explain it? Brand is one of those new business-speak words that's just incredibly vaugue and corny.

I'll give you a simple example.

When Duke has a good season, they still don't move the needle as far as TV ratings go.

When Florida State has a good season, they attract a lot of eyeballs.

Name recognition. Kids these days think “badass college football programs” and they think Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State. That’s brand.

really?

what is difficult to understand?

the schools that attract the most eyeballs are the most valuable, does not matter what state they are in

Sports today is all about getting people to watch on TV. The more big name teams in the conference, the bigger the dollars from ESPN. More people will watch Clemson on TV than will tune in a Vanderbilt game.
