I'm watching a Netflix show about a wrestling promotion he owns in Louisville and he seems like such a tool. At least Finebaum used to have the gimmick callers (RIP to Phyllis and Tammy).

I think he’s liked, mostly. Some people can’t separate him from his political views (he considered a run in politics as a democrat). But, he’s die hard UK, started KSR, and is usually pretty funny and entertaining.
He can sometimes seem kinda pissy and whiny, but he can also be pretty self effacing and genuine.
I mostly like him. In the show, they do paint him as a villain, especially early on, but that changes as the show progresses and as he and Al Snow start to understand each other more and more.
There are times where he definitely comes off as arrogant and condescending, no doubt. However, I think his genuine love for the state of Kentucky and UK trump his character flaws… for me, anyway.

To more directly answer the question, yes he is very popular in the state… as long as “popular” means “widely known” or maybe even “notorious”. U of L people absolutely loathe him, but they know who he is for sure.

hes definitely whiny, pretty fanatical at times for a journo, but as a neutral observer I like him. other fanbases have far worse.

I guess it doesn't help that everyone on this show (Al Snow included) seem to think way to highly of themselves.

The saga of OVW is rather fascinating. I mean, yeah, the dying days of the promotion is good TV now, but good Lord the talent Cornette and Davis produced back in the golden days is amazing.

When he first started, he used to steal info from pay sites all of the time before he actually got big enough to have some legitimate connections. So it's kind of funny to see how things are now.
He's not my favorite to follow and he can be douchey at times but I find most people that do what he do are similar. He has flaws but he's provided plenty of good inside info to fans over the years.
I do appreciate the creation of KSR and what it facilitates at times from a fan perspective. Most people who follow sports in Kentucky know who he is and KSR has a huge, huge following.

Haley J is actually getting a WWE tryout. I doubt that will go anywhere.

KSR is a good thing when it comes to wanting UK sports news.
Get tired of his love for Calipari and him saying "he's the man for the job" when we have consistent poor to mediocre seasons.
I mainly just read an article if they report something major happening and ignore the radio show.

Think of Matt Jones as a (D) version of Clay Travis
+ Works at his trade
+ Well known in the state
+ Pisses off UK rivals
- Arrogant
- Does not listen
- Does not play well with others
- Too much in love with himself and his views
- Totes UK's line, even if it is bad for fans or bad financial decisions

Yes he's a tool and yes he's extremely popular here.
Haven't watched the Wrestlers documentary yet, but I did go to the OVW wrestling match they had in the KSBar parking lot after Ball State. A lot of fun, even though it was hot as frick at the game that day. I was dehydrated from too much beer and bourbon that morning pregaming.

He can be a prick but he does love the Commonwealth and promotes the small towns and out of the way places
He helped raise money when the people of Wolfe County lacked drinking water and when the tornadoes hit Western Kentucky and the Eastern Kentucky floods.

As for Jones, I'm fine with him. He does a radio show, they talk about things. No big whoop.

He's reasonbly well known, but he's far left politically, so a lot of people don't like him. He came off as a douche because he is one in real life.

I don't care for him, but I would agree with this.

There is a thread about the Netflix show in the Movie/TV board if you are interested.

I will also say, while I don't like him, his seizure was hard to watch. I would only wish that on Tennessee alters.

He's very much a Millennial. Very, very much.
He has the assumption, as do all the other voices and writers on KSR, that they are "in charge".
I'm surprised none of the other wrestlers have popped him yet. I'm also surprised, from the stories Matt Jones tells, that nobody in a drive through has popped him yet.
He goes through life, purposely, with that belligerent assumption that he'll be obeyed. He also is meticulous about not going into places where that assumption gets crushed.
Except for OVW. Which I think is because of AL Snow.

You mean “none of the wrestlers.” That’s the problem, not only is he not a worker, he goes out of his way to not comprehend backstage. Every business has its own nuances and uniqueness. But professional wrestling is peculiar even among the quirkiest of industries. The one thing, however, that ties it all together is respect. If you can shut up and show a modicum of respect for more than five minutes at a time, you can survive. Jones can do neither.
(None of it matters anyway. At least not until he learns to clear his damn throat. That shite is unbearable)
