To be honest, just in general when discussing football, most people really don't care about what you do against the lesser teams on your schedule as long as you win (and that's even in these greatest of all time debates). Miami's close calls in 2001 come to mind.

2019 was not one of LSU's best defenses. They had timely playmaking ability and they were actually very talented (though banged up for a good part of the season).

I believe LSU had 10 of 11 starters drafted from that D (including 3 1st rounders) and I think 16 guys who played on that D overall were drafted.

That D finished #1 in the nation in passes defended/broken up per game, were in the top 20 in Ints./game and were around the top 5 in opponent 3rd down conversion %.

Down the stretch, against the best scoring offenses they played all year, they held every team well under their scoring average. They held the #2 scoring offense (Bama) 6 below their average (13 if you count that 7 points came from an incredible punt return TD) , they held the #4 offense (Clemson) 18 below their average and they held the #6 scoring offense (OU) 14 below their average (and to a season low rushing yard total under 100). So when it meant the most then and in the SECCG when they held UGA to 20 below their scoring average, LSU's D showed up and made big plays.

That's what people remember despite the inconsistency earlier in the season. Maybe they should consider the inconsistency when having the best of all time debates, but what you do against the best has been the measuring stick for a long time.
