Let this sink in...It was said today that last year's Bama offense had more 3 and outs than the previous 15 years combined.
A more balanced offense should most definitely help our defense as well.

Where did you see this?
Jesus, if true.
ETA: Buddy says Ryan Fowler said it on the radio this afternoon.
Talk about a freaking nut punch.

I heard it on the College Football Nerds podcast, and Ryan Fowler said it today on his radio show.

We won simply on pure raw talent last year. Crazy if we actually had some coaching to go with that team.

Just watching Steele's press conference, it's so clear that the level of intensity, professionalism, and accountability that he brings to the team is night and day compared to Golding.
Saban liked Golding on a personal level. He was a hell of a recruiter and apparently a savant on paper. But when it comes to actually stepping onto the field and getting results, we were basically playing with a G5 caliber coordinator (and that's being nice about it).
It's really one of the biggest mistakes of Saban's career. It may have cost us one, if not two titles.

My buddy said Fowler prefaced his reporting of the stat with this:

quote:
He led into it by asking that if we were not sitting down we need to be. If we're driving make sure we have a good grip on the wheel. Then he stated the statistic. Everyone calling into the show was appalled.

Remember last year when we kept saying this team is finding a way to win despite the coaching. I actually 100% believe it now.

Yes. It was the game with Ryan Fowler.
I was actually cooking dinner at the time I heard that staggering stat.
Terrible coaching leads to bad execution, bad, situational play calls and stupid penalties
It's an awful recipe for even a team of 4 and 5 stars.

That’s a hard stat to believe. Damn, that is bad.

I'm optimistic about the new coordinators, but one thing really gnaws away at me still about last year's coordinators situation...
Saban let it happen.
Both coaches were returning. BoB for the second year. Golding for the 4th/5th year.
The fact that Saban made that mistake gives me some pause about how much longer we have at the top. It just doesn't seem like he would have made that mistake earlier in his career.
This is the guy that was bold enough to bench a 2 year starter (and SEC player of the year) at QB at halftime of a national championship. Fired Kiffin just days before the championship. Demoted Lupoi mid-season. Fired Applewhite after 1 season. Demoted Steele after 1 season because he saw Kirby's future. Etc.
Hard to believe it's the same guy that let this drag out for years with Golding, and for a 2nd season with BoB, while we had arguably one of the most talent-rich rosters of the last two decades.

How does one even figure something like that out. Is there some stat somewhere for 3 and outs per year?

Somehow I think the "combined" part probably isn't accurate.

That likely cost him the championship that year, too, and he was aware of that. I believe that factored into his handling of coordinators last year. With Bryce Young returning, he probably figured he could win it all by keeping things stable. If Bryce hadn't hurt his shoulder in the Arkansas game, he may have succeeded. Shame to see a talent like Bryce had wasted.

Yes it is. If they avg let’s say 7 three and outs per game in 13 games, that’s 91 total for the whole yr
And he saying Bama had less than that in the prior 15yrs combined?

Quite possibly. But it was something that had to be done, and he was bold enough to do it.
The "what if" of Kiffin calling the NCG is a really interesting one. Although lets not forget - the offense walked off the field for the last time with the lead in that one.

I told people all year that if you take Bryce Young off that squad, you’re looking at a 5 loss team.
