Attn Tennessee fans: what are your opinions now of the Big Pumpkin, aka, Philip Fulmer??

He's one of your own, you know. A native son.
He had a fine 152-52 record at UT, going 8-7 in bowl games, won one national championship in 1998, 2 SEC titles and 6 SEC-Eastern titles.
But........
He hired Jeremy Pruitt. Fulmer's boy. Under which rock is the Pumpkin hiding under these days (if there's one big enough to cover him)?
Would love to know how Tennessee fans feel about Fulmer now. Let us know....we have all day.

Same as it has been for 20 years.
His arse, along with Mike Hamilton, did more damage to UT, than the NCAA could have with the death penalty.

He kept these operations at a comfortable length to let Pruitt fall on the sword. This ain’t his first rodeo

Couldn’t have stated it better.

It's karma that he had to hire someone off BAMA's staff to save his Vols. No one in the history of college football deserves the outcome more. 28 scholarships lost, 11 vacated wins, 8 million dollar fine, and 5 years probation. I hope they carve that in his headstone.

The fans? You mean the ones that threw a hissy fit over Schiano and all of Currie's other choices like Leach, which led to Currie losing his job as AD which led to Fulmer becoming AD and ultimately hiring Pruitt.
The fans quite literally asked for this, it's as much their fault as any.

Good coach, should have been given at least one more year when fired. Terrible AD, never should have been hired.

Schiano sucks arse and the fans were right. He is a terrible coach, got fired from Ohio State for sucking, never got any serious p5 offers despite tons of vacancies at the time, tucked tail back to Rutgers and has gone 8-14 since. He would not have done well at UT as a fat tomato faced mediocre buzzcutt northerner, considering we had just gotten rid of Butch Jones. Furthermore, every fan in the SEC would talk shite about hiring a pedo, regardless of whether he actually participated or not. I don't care if its just a tangential connection, we didn't need that association.
I like Leach but his ceiling in the SEC was never going to be anything more than an occasional 10-win season and that would not have satisfied the program long-term. And he unfortunately passed away so that would have caused problems just like it did to State.
At the time, Pruitt seemed like a good hire in a vacuum. Had tons of championship experience at multiple SEC teams, recruiting connection, defensive genius, football mind. We had just come off Butch Jones who knew nothing about football, so it seemed nice to have a guy who was almost pure football. Hindsight being 20/20 yeah we shouldn't have hired him, but it was not a terrible hire at the time. Just like the Lane Kiffin hire wasn't terrible...until it was.
Yeah we suffered with Pruitt, but that fiasco led to Danny White, Josh Heupel, and a major resurgence of UT sports across the board. Highest director's cup finish ever for us this year and competitive in all major sports, with the best football season since the early 2000s (including an LSU beatdown at home).
We're doing just fine, thanks

Same as it’s been. Remember and appreciate the good and forgive the bad

Schiano would have been Butch Jones 2.0. UT fans were right to have a meltdown about that.

You have to either already hate Fulmer or be a moron to blame him for the hire. That search was fricked up beyond repair before he was anywhere near it.

That's true.
True Prof. I'm not a fan of Phat Phil but that's the fact of the matter. Fulmer was thrust into a fairly unwinnable situation and almost forced-to make the hire with some serious limitations in play at the time. He rolled the dice ... and lost. How it plays-out in the long run, how much damage was done, is yet to be seen but the sanctions are not good, although, they could have been much worse.

Phil Fulmer just about loved Tennessee to death.
Still, the penalties were worse than I though they'd be, considering the NCAA has just about checked all the way out.

His machinations behind the scenes to move John Currie out of a job and himself into one had a lot to do with it being fricked up.

Well, he basically did the same thing (machinations-wise behind the scenes) while cutting Johnny Majors' throat when Majors was having heart issues.
