Why do you think the SEC chose those six in 1992?

Hey man, we're discussing if there is a consensus #2 football program in SEC history in this thread. It's in the subject of the OP.

I'm happy for you that Bama has been a good football team for a long time, but if you can't stick to the topic, go have too much Bama in ya somewhere else.

The OP got derailed & sidetracked to the point that an Auburn poster is peppering the thread with Big 6 discussions.

Is there a consensus #2 football program in the SEC historically?

The fact that the Vols relinquished their #2 position because they slipped to the depths of hell for 15 yrs while other programs (LSU/UGA) have had the best years in their program's history in the same time frame makes it difficult to determine.

This is all correct.

So the answer to the question posed in OP is "no."

It is difficult but not for the reason you mentioned. UT being bad and lsu/uga being good is just recency bias and letting emotion and feeling enter the equation. Ultimatley we're talkign about numbers and stats. Black and white.

It's a testament to how great of a prorgram UT was that they did have a stronghold on #2 for so long taht they can be this bad for 20 yeras and only have just now given it up. But when you look at the actual numbers, I just don't see any way they're still number 2. They've been passed over in almost every major category that would be worthy of ranking teams.

Did you realize that OU has never won a NC or playoff game against an SEC team?

They are 0 for the bunch

1950-OU NC, lost to Kentucky in the bowl
2003- lost to LSU
2008- lost to Florida
2017- lost to Georgia
2018- lost to Alabama
2019- lost to LSU

Soon to be Oklahoma.

Alabama is #1

Oklahoma is #2

LSU, Georgia, Texas, Florida, Tennessee, and Auburn are 3-8 in that order, but the separation between those six is smaller than the separation between #2 Oklahoma and #3 LSU… and also tighter than the gap between #8 Auburn and #9 Texas A&M.

That is what people thought about Nebraska when they joined the Big 10

You also said the Big 6 didn’t exist until the 80s. These six rose to the top in 60s. It goes back much further

Lmao what? OU has a winning record vs the sec and even bama.

OU is 7-10-1 against the SEC in bowls
OU is zero for the SEC in title and playoff games

Congrats on catching Bama with 21 less scholarship players in 2002 and 2003

No. Nebraska had already fallen off as a program after the 2001 season. In the nine years prior to joining the BIG10, Nebraska averaged 5 losses/season. That’s a near decade of mediocrity.

Oklahoma is not coming into the SEC in that way.

Future conference is not like their old conference.

OU played in an conference with 3 of the worst teams in college football history (almost half the conference)

So, it was MUCH easier to win

OU has never beaten an SEC team in the national title game or playoffs, and neither has Texas (OU 5 times, Texas 2 times)

OU and Texas will be middle of the road SEC teams.

Just reminds football fans that ALABAMA is to SEC football what Kentucky is to SEC basketball.

Both programs are just historically so far in front of any SEC contender that they just become SEC pretenders.

Still the truth is the SEC is loaded. The SEC averages 3 NC per decade and has not missed a decade winning the NC

50-3
60-3
70-3
80-1
90-3
00-5
10-6
20-3 (so far)

not all of those are Alabama's

The Big 12 teams for Nebraska are not the Big 12 teams for Oklahoma.

But I concede the point

Nebraska hadn't been in a major bowl game in a decade when they joined the Big Ten. Oklahoma was in the playoffs as recently as 2019 and in a NY6 Bowl as recently as 2020.

Take a deep breath and read his post again, veeeery slowly. Here it is for you:

The term and concept of "big 6" didn't exist until 1992 when the league split into divisions. You had 3 big boys on one side and 3 on the other. It was the 6 (of 12 at that point) teams that had historically accomplished the most.

He clearly says the CONCEPT of the Big 6 came in 1992. He also said that they were chosen based of their historical accomplishments. The historical accomplishments part clearly takes in the 60s and even before.

Stop seeing Georgia fan and actually read posts. You are doing knee jerk reactionary posts.

I am enjoying this thread.

However, it was my understanding "Big Six" means nothing more than the last and possibly only six teams to win the conference since Kentucky shared the title with Alabama in 1977 (6-0 v. 7-0 conference record) and, even farther back than that, Ole Miss's last outright conference title in 1963.

I didn't think it was based on anything more than that.

Furthermore, I've never heard anyone other than Tiger Droppings posters reference the "Big Six." I honestly think the concept primarily exists on this message board.

So, when did it come into being? I suppose it did so once it became clear no little 4/6/8 team was going to win the conference?

You are quite right.

It's a concept no doubt developed by the LSU fans on this board in a vain effort to put their program on an equal footing with Alabama, if not in the record books than at least in their fragile minds.
