Saban has compiled a 274-67-1 (.803) record, including a 183-25 (.880) mark in Tuscaloosa. I'm not sure where the 51 losses come from, but they weren't in Tuscaloosa. That would mean 51 of his total of 67 losses were to top 25 teams, which is possible I guess.

Some supposedly great coaches have some pretty piss poor records against final ranked teams.

Johnny Vaught @ Ole Miss: 28-34-4 .45455
Vince Dooley @ Georgia: 30-49-5 .38690
Frank Broyles @ Arkansas: 19-33-1 .36792
Shug Jordan @ Auburn: 29-53-1 .35542
Johnny Majors @ Tennessee: 14-35-6 .30909
Wally Butts @ Georgia: 11-40-2 .22642

I remember about Mullen was that we didn't play many #18-25 teams. That was part of his bad record against the Top 25. They were either unranked or Top 15, often top 5. If they were #20 and he beat them, they didn't finish in the top 25.

Discuss & nitpick as you see fit

I think total wins is probably the most important component to the stat.

Winning percentage is probably second and provides great context.

You aren't supposed to win a lot of games against a top 5 opponent. Just getting any is impressive.

Extrapolate that down to the majority of programs and the scale slides:
You aren't supposed to win a lot of games against top 10 opponents.
Or you aren't supposed to win a lot of games against top 15 opponents.
Etc.. etc..

9. Steve Sarkisian: 7-28 (.200)
10. Mark Stoops: 5-28 (.152)
11. Lane Kiffin: 4-23 (.148)

This is the most eye opening section. I had no idea Lane was so lame. And Heupel the savior is 6-10??? Wow.

4 of his losses at Alabama have come against teams that finished unranked in the AP poll.

2021 A&M
2007 ULM
2007 Miss St
2007 Florida St

He had 4 while he was at LSU
6 at Michigan State
2 at Toledo

Impressive cognitive skills. His career didn’t start in Tuscaloosa so it’s safe to assume that a few losses came at Toledo, Michigan State, and LSU.

Just used wikipedia and clicked on every team he lost to at Mich. St. and LSU. 29 ranked teams. He didn't lose to ranked team at Toledo. So he'd need 22 ranked losses at Bama. If it's not right, it's extremely close. Almost every loss he's had since 2007 is to a ranked team in the final poll. In 2007 he lost to Georgia, LSU and Auburn who were all ranked in the final poll.

I mean, you can only beat the teams that are in front of you. If we beat someone, and then they continue to lose, not our fault.

If you lose to them, then yes. It is your fault. If they continue to lose, then it is a clear indication that they are not a top 25 team.

Of course they matter. They are a part of what goes in to determining if they are a top 25 team. You go 12-0 and lose in the SECCG and playoffs, and you will still be a top 25 team. You go 0-12 and nothing will make you a top 25 team.

Am I missing your point?

Kudos to BAMA - their # of games played and won vs high-level competition crushes everyone. Especially #1.
