Sources: Georgia is finalizing a deal to make LSU pitching coach Wes Johnson the school’s new head coach. Johnson has extensive SEC experience from his time at LSU, Mississippi State and Arkansas as a pitching coach.

Johnson also brings more than three years of MLB experience with the Minnesota Twins. The combination of those two factors made him attractive to the Georgia brass, per ESPN sources.

Johnson was a candidate for this job from the get go, as was Campbell's Justin Haire. Was told over the weekend that Haire had decided to remain at Campbell for the time being.

It doesn’t mean more in Georgia. Sad to see when their football program and SEC TV is bringing in ridiculous money.

One thing about the @BaseballUGA job is that I was told throughout the process that UGA was unwilling to pay premium dollar for a head coach. That in itself limited its options to either A) assistants or B) mid-major head coaches.

This ain’t gonna hurt our feelings if it comes to pass

This would not be the best hire for UGA

Don't think LSU fans are too upset about this. A lot of baseball talent comes out of Georgia, I think the right coach could build them into something formidable. I don't think Wes is that guy though. Good luck.

If he recruits worth a shite, that’s all I care about at the moment. Need to reestablish UGA as a realistic destination for the top talent in the state. If he struggles to make Omaha in 5-7 years, we can aim higher but for now we just need to get back in the race

He's never been a recruiter, but I suppose he could learn how to.

I gotta give him some credit, Hurd and Floyd have settled in nicely and our guys command looks night and day from even middle season. He’s a first year coach so would be unfair to judge him based solely on the way guys played for him early season.

But, Little was abysmal and the injuries were not optimal either. So I give it a C+ hire.

LSU added Paul Skenes (before Johnson was hired) and still saw its team ERA go from 4.32 last season to 4.60 this season. What has Johnson done to impress you?

Congrats to Georgia and congrats to Wes Johnson. The only thing that sucks is that it was leaked before the season is over for LSU. This could have waited until June 25th.

ETA - Of course it’s Pete Thamel who leaked the story. What a douchebag.

He’s been at LSU, MSU, and Arkansas plus has experience with the Twins. At the very least he knows how better orgs than UGA are supposed to look and can hire a staff to do whatever he can’t.
