Have seen them twice in Athens and twice in Savannah

Most overrated Athens band and it isn't close.
Best downtown Athens event in my UGA days was the Twilight Criterium bike race, especially when it had rained most of the day before the night races.

I saw them over 100 times in many cities and states across the country, including Panic in the Streets. Good times.

They were a pretty big deal, sold out stadiums and arenas around the country for decades, in what way are they overrated? You want overrated, let's talk Pylon.

Touchdown Club of Atlanta guy: give me someone you have played golf with that made you the most nervous?
Kirby Smart: JB from Widespread panic. I was pretty nervous hitting my first tee shot in front of him.
TCA: he's gotta be a Dawgs fan, perhaps JB was nervous hitting in front of you too?
KS: Nah man, that guy didn't give a shite about playing in front of me. He wasn't nervous about anything.
TCA: You got a favorite WSP song?
KS: Space Wrangler
Later he was asked if he attended Panic in the Streets while he was a student and he said, "You kidding me? Everybody went to that. You would've been some kind of weirdo hiding out in your basement if you skipped that show. And they set that stage up right in front of my fraternity house lawn"

Twilight Criterium
In the daytime when it's less crowded and the bmx and skaters on the halfpipes doing crazy shite, Twilight is fun. All the actual bike racing is communism.

Always enjoyed the revelry leading up to the race. Race itself is fun for a few laps and then my ADD kicks in.
The kids bike race beforehand was always good for a laugh. Few years where one kid would fall at the start and the whole crowd would go down

Hell yeah. I bet Kirby, Bobo, and Will have this tattooed somewhere.

I intensely dislike the Dead, Phish, WP, and that type music, so I think it's vastly overrated.
I do agree that Pylon is way overrated as well.

So you are more into Morrisey, Jesus Jones, and Coldplay kind of stuff, with maybe some Nickleback sprinkled in.

Pylon shows were fricking awesome. Vanessa is one of the kindest people you will ever meet. She ended up being a nurse in Athens.
I despised the whole hippy scene. Frankly, I despised scenes in general.
The Criterion was a lot of fun. All day drinking in down town.

None of the 3 are anything alike. The best band going these days is Goose and you probably wouldn’t like them either.

Damn time flies.
The show was all right, but I had a blast people watching. The most memorable things from that night were the porta johns over flowing and some dude next to me on Washington St. dropping and shattering a glass beer bottle on a uniformed police officer's foot. He looked up with total fear in his eyes but the officer just waived him on.
Also, Sheriff Berry in Oconee County set up a sign with flashing lights on 316 saying there was a vehicle stop ahead with drug sniffing dogs. The sign was just before Virgil Langford Road. If you kept on driving down 316 there was no traffic stop. They put the traffic stop a half mile down Virgil Lankgord Road. People who bugged out took the first turn after the flashing sign thinking they were safe, but instead drove right into the traffic stop.

You don't need a bicycle race to do that.

Dallas, what are some concerts you went to back in the day? What was your first concert? I bet you saw some good stuff.
Posted on 4/18/23 at 5:35 pm to Rex Feral
Wasn't there a 100 year flood around the same time as the concert? Heard some folks camping near the present day mamas boys lost their shite
Posted on 4/18/23 at 6:21 pm to K9
That would have been Dudley Park, present day "north oconee greenway." It doesn't have to be a 100 year flood for the North Oconee River to breach its banks into the floodplain there. It happens commonly. That's why all the greenspace so close to downtown that would otherwise be very high value real estate. You simply can't build anything there because of the river and topography at that location.
