Essentially FoCo is attempting to build something different that will rival The Battery on Cobb County including a big arena which they’re hoping to lure the NHL with. So the Cumming Thrashers it is then

Why is Anson Carter so pissed off?
quote:
Klein reached out to Anson Carter, a co-owner of the Atlanta Gladiators minor league hockey team. The Gladiators currently play at Gas South Arena in Duluth, less than 20 miles away from the Gathering at South Forsyth’s planned location. Carter is also a broadcaster for the NHL on TNT, which begins playoff coverage on Monday night.
“Shows a lot of disrespect for the hockey community to drop this tonight. The entire hockey world knows what happening tonight. It shows me a total disconnect.. that’s why hockey has failed in this community twice I’m focused on the roots, not the fruits. Best of luck to them, I’m excited for them, but it’s disappointing.”

Lol, that’s not a transparent melt at all.
This is awesome btw. South Forsyth is the perfect spot for a hockey team. Could not have picked a better location. All the northern suburbanites will eat it up and that’s where 90% of the hockey fans in the state live.

I believe that land has an Alpharetta address.

Went to middle and high school with Krause’s daughter , Angela, and knew the family well when he owned Cherokee Ford. Sad what happened to Angela.
That being said, Krause busted on a huge potential project already on Old Alabama when he wanted to build a massive tennis/sports/rec complex. BTW - Angela loved tennis and that was a big part of him pushing for that.
Anyway - I heard the NHL was looking more at North Point mall area as the replacement.
Will be interesting to see what happens with all this.

She died of a rare form of cancer in her early 30s. She had just had her 2nd child. They changed some of their dealerships to Angela Krause XXX, like Angela Krause Ford of Woodstock from Cherokee Ford. She was their youngest. She had a sister and 2 brothers. I didn’t really know her after college though, but remember hearing about it as it was happening. Really sad

Found the story on the tennis complex. Didn’t realize it’s been 5 years since it was shut down. Also remember it being big, but holy crap not THAT big
Also didn’t realize he has 15 dealerships now. Wow. Only had 4 when this article was written and only had 1 when we were in High School.

The NHL will never entrust Atlanta again with a major franchise. I just don't see it happening.

Where is the proposed location?

why not? It's failed in the past not because of lack of fan support or lack of desire for hockey in the community. It's failed because of utterly indescribably shitty (maybe even to the point of sabotage) ownership. As long as someone with a couple functioning brain cells that cares even the teeniest slightest bit about the team they own is involved, it would flourish.

Ronald Reagan Blvd at Union Hill Road. Close to Exit 12 of 400.
Far southern edge of the county, near Halcyon.

They are currently building a new interchange in the area just south of McFarland Rd. This proposed arena would be to the east side of 400. The group that bought the Atlanta Hawks also bought the Thrashers, it was a package deal. They didn't want the hockey team so they pretty much sold it, with the blessing of the NHL. The Winnipeg team relocated to Arizona back in the 90's and the NHL wanted to get them a team back in that area, so they were more than happy to screw Atlanta fans and move the team.
Atlanta is rumored to possibly be in the running to get the Coyotes or the Ottawa Senators. It has been a disaster for Arizona. The team has faced bankruptcy and other issues with finding an arena to play in. They currently play in a 5000 seat arena on the campus of ASU. If the city of Tempe does not approve a new arena, the team will most likely relocate.
The Gladiators would probably not do well if an NHL team were so close. Also, Athens will be getting a minor league hockey team as soon as the arena at the Classic Center is complete.

Has interest in hockey been on the rise in ATL? I had a younger cousin play hockey growing up and then played on the club team in college. That shite was nonexistent when I was a kid but maybe it's coming around.
Still, I can't imagine putting an arena in Alpharetta? That location sucks.

In fairness, "they" also hated the Cobb Cloverleaf location for the Braves and they seem to be doing fine.

Yesterday was the 1st night of the 2023 playoffs. I'm guessing he didnt think that was good timing, drawing attention away from that. That's just a guess though.

Lol, he’s mad for one or both of two reasons:
1) Putting an NHL team in Alpharetta would put a massive dent in the Gladiators attendance. He’s a minority owner of the Glads.
2) He doesn’t like the team being in the northern suburbs rather than downtown ala what the Braves did.

Yup, he's mad that someone else is trying to take away his cut of the hockey market in Metro Atlanta. The whole statement reeks of asshurt.

It would be a packed arena but with opposing fans. Flyers, Rangers, Blackhawks etc.
