pretty wild how the press just completely vanished outside of late in games or in unique situations. It just isn't part of the game anymore. Neither is 3/4 trapping or any of the other pressure defense that everyone used to try and run in the 90s
So true…The press is pretty much dead in above high school ball

Still remember when Pitino tried to press with the Celtics

I guess back then your best NBA prospects didn’t leave early from college until at least Junior year

Pitino’s press was something to behold too.
Even he’s evolved passed using it like he did. I want to say his last good pressing team was UofL around 2012-13. And even they didn’t to the degree he did at UK and his early UofL years.
I wonder if maybe it’s become more difficult to prevent the pass out of the press because positions have changed and you see bigs passing with better efficiency?

Here is an interesting article from Pearl when he first got to Auburn on why he doesn't press anymore. As Bluegrass notes, it entirely has to do with how the game is called. Freedom of movement killed it.
Why Bruce Pearl stopped pressing
Huggins, Shaka and Pearl were all press guys until 2015 and don't do it anymore.

Thank you for the blast from the past. The SWC was good back then for a stretch.
I had forgotten Ron Huery played with that group, he was a huge pickup for Nolan.

From your article:
Makes sense. The freedom of movement rules really eliminates tighter on ball defense outside of the paint. Hard to press when you have to give more space.

Pearl is citing the NCAA’s rule changes implemented in 2015 to increase freedom of movement for the offensive player both in the post and on the perimeter to have the product more resemble the NBA and international play seen during Olympics and World Championships. It is these rules changes that Pearl said Monday have forced Pearl to essentially play without the thing he claims to love the most

Yep - though I bet the shift to position less guys and bigs who can dribble and pass with efficiency AND shoot from outside would really make it tough, too.
Part of the press was that even if it didn't you turn you over it sped you up and got guys the ball in spots they didn't want it (bigs out high), and by the time you settled in you were in a rush to start offense.
That wouldn't exist for most teams anymore.

Kind of makes you wonder how the shift in officiating rules, particularly ones that can be really subjective, has effected defenses as a whole.
Most teams I’ve seen that have had really aggressive defenses in the regular season struggled in the NCAA Tournament at times with a shift in quality of officiating.

Are you implying that basketball is more physical in 2023 than it was in 1993?

I don't know what college basketball has to do rules wise to get back to that type of game, but they need to do it asap.

FFWD to 8:10 to hear the SEC chant.

The most talented players are in college for one season, at most. The top two picks and likely four of the top 10 in the next draft will never have played college ball.

Fundamentals are horrible now days.
The 3 point line was horrible for basketball.
I miss having 3/4 year players in your program

Great footage even with a Texas loss. Really excited to get two hated rivals back.
