I heard a man on the radio the other day get asked about who are the up and coming young coaches out there right now. Ones to watch that are on the short list to land a big time college head coaching opportunity in the near future.
The first name that came out of his mouth without hesitation was some 35 year old tight ends coach at Alabama named Joe Cox. He spoke of him like he was some kind of jedi assessor of talent and recruitor and was one of Saban’s biggest secret weapons.
I knew UGA’s Joe Cox had tried to get into coaching but thought, no way, that cant be who Joel Klatt is talking about here. I knew he had been at Colorado State briefly for the failed Bobo experiment, but last i heard, Joe was coaching high school ball in charlotte.
But I just remembered to look it up. And its him.
Am I the only one that didnt know that Georgia’s Joe Cox is being talked about as the next Nick Saban football wizard protoge?

I have a hard time believing the guy that walked around DT Athens in baggy white t-shirts, sagging shorts, and gold chains is the next great football mind.

Still remember seeing his truck with the massive back window sticker that said "KING COX" parked in the same complex as my older brother when I came to visit

Cox kind of reminds me of Carson Beck.
Joe Cox could tear up a 7 on 7 competition. He'd make every throw. Drop dimes deep and along the sidelines.
But make him play football with pressure in his face, and a different QB showed up.
It is what makes Stetson so good right now (handling a pass rush).
Carson hasn't flashed that ability yet.
I'm not saying that he is as bad at it as Joe Cox. But it is what has kept him off the field despite getting more first team reps than Stetson in 2 out of the last 3 offseasons.

I think it was 5 passing TDs on the road.
But he had a clean pocket.
In games with pressure, the worst outcome often happened (against South Carolina, I think he had a sack/fumble. I think he tried to throw the ball away to the sideline which led to a pick 6).

YEah that 2009 game was fun. Richard Samuel broke off a long (80 yards I think?) TD run and we were all excited about him rounding into form but that was the highlight of his entire career.
Ryan Mallett kept answering us time and time again and our lousy defense eventually held enough to pull out a close one.
That was my only trip to Fayetteville but I was very impressed with the town. It's a great college town with cool bars and I was surprised to see their stadium was oriented similar to Sanford in that it kinda sat down in a hole a bit.

Exactly. Stetson is lacking physical abilities, but kid is very strong mentally and keeps cool under pressure.

He killed off a WLOCP game in Jax maybe the same year. Ran it 6 or 7 plays in a row and finished the drive with a TD that ended the Gators.

that was 2011. Jacked up his ankle on the final run which I think may have ended his career.

The WLOCP was definitely Samuel's career highlight.
A strange career at that. Super hyped 5 star. I think he actually achieved about what he was capable of...he had all the measurables, but was just not a great football player.

Cox was such a mixed bag. Elite 11 recruit. Set all sorts of records in NC. The Colorado comeback is probably my favorite of Cox's.

Idk if I'd agree. I think people may inflate that in their memories since we'd lost to UF 3 years in a row and it felt so good to finally win again. Samuel in that game had 17 carries for 58 yards (3.4 YPC) and the 1 touchdown in the 4th after getting most of the carries on that drive and putting us ahead. His long run of the day was 9 yards.
The arkansas game he had 16 carries for 104 yards (6.5 YPC) and the 1 TD on an 80 yard run.
It's kinda sad that he had so little to choose from in the way of career highlights after being so highly touted but oh well. many felt he should've been a LB from the get go ayway but I think he only came here bc we let him play RB

The FL game is what I remember him most for. The AK game was probably a better game though.
