I'm not understanding the bowl hate expressed by so many here.

It sucks as a Bama fan not to have been in the SEC championship game or in the playoffs. It also sucks that as the highest ranked SEC team not involved in the playoffs that we were assigned the Sugar Bowl, which I normally love, but to play it at 11 AM on New Year's Eve day is just crazy. The team below us in the hierarchy, Tennessee, got a much better deal playing Clemson in the Orange bowl at night on January 2 but so it goes. But having said all that, the bottom line is that I get to watch my team play another game. Their first practice is today and so far we have no idea who might opt out of the game (which is something I really don't like either but it's here to stay) but as nice as it would be to have the whole team playing, it will still be fun to watch the younger guys play that will have to replace any opt outs and to see how the coaches handle the whole situation. And today the NCAA has declared that bowl games would not count against anyone's redshirt eligibility which means everyone can play. Why on earth would anyone not want to get another chance to watch his team play one more time before the long drought leading up to next season?
When we lost to Florida in the SEC championship game in 2008 in the 4th quarter and had to play Utah in the Sugar Bowl, nobody wanted to be there and I understand that. I also understand if a team was just terrible all year but managed to get bowl eligible and their fans would rather just move on to next season. But other than those 2 scenarios what would you rather do than watch your team play another game?. No it doesn't decide anything but when Alabama, Tennessee, LSU, etc. play a game it's not "meaningless" in my opinion. So we get to watch all of those games and will also get to read stories about practices for the next 2 weeks. In another 30 days or so, after the playoffs, I'll be wishing for more college football so I'll damn sure watch every game I can until then.
Thanks for letting me rant. I hope all you baws have a good weekend.

If players don't care about them, then why should fans?

Part of the fun of being in the SEC is everyone telling us that the conference is just Alabama and one or two other teams that are up that year, while most of the conference typically shows out in bowl season against opponents of comparable quality. It's year-end and everyone's team has gelled and found its identity, so it's the perfect time to test mettle.
Except now, we get to play the fun little side game of which team is going to be more decimated by players deciding not to play, so it may as well be the first game of the year again. Everything is "meaningless" until we assign meaning to it. The meaning of bowl season for a fan of a football program has been heavily compromised, so now people care mostly out of habit, losing a little more enthusiasm for it each year.

I'm not mad that LSU blocked the Tide out of the playoffs this year
This was a rebuilding year for LSU

No, New Orleans is a shite hole just slightly less at 11am vice 7pm. I'd rather go to any of the other NY6 locales.

I’m glad it is. I can watch my team then enjoy the rest of my day.

But you can get a po boy at Johnny's, oysters at Felix's, and one of those nasty arse hurricanes at Pat Obriens. Buy some coke at Krystal. Lose $500 in five minutes at Hard Rock. Your wife can post dozens of pics to social media. It's basically an Alabama nocturnal emission.

Sure but my point is that I'm going to enjoy my team playing another game, anywhere anytime and don't understand why some don't seem to want to play or watch a bowl game if it's not a playoff game.

December 30th, but time slot is a valid point

I got confused about the date, sorry.

That's basically my point as well. It sounds like an 11am kickoff in the Sugar Bowl is below some of you baws.
I think every Bama fan should be forced to be a Mizzou fan for a season. After that, it's all gravy for you guys I would imagine. Perspective...it's the key to a happy life.

It's just a historically weird time for a Sugar Bowl, but still glad to be there.

We play on December 30th if that makes you feel better

I didn't understand it then and I still don't now. Bama was coming off back to back 6-6 seasons, Saban hadn't won you guys any hardware yet, it was Bama's first Sugar Bowl in over 15 years. Why did nobody want to be there?

The guy in your avatar is coaching against LSU in the Cheez-it Bowl.

We lost the SECCG in the 4th quarter to Tebow and Florida and would have been playing for the natty had we won. No one knew anything about Utah, they didn't have the reputation then that they do now and it just seemed (at the time) like a crap matchup. Then they just beat the stuffing out of us.
