2005- Les Miles. Lost game. Won 1 NCship. Eventually fired.

2013- Gus Malzahn. Won game. Won 0 NCships. Eventually fired.

2015- Jim McElwain. Lost game. Won 0 NCships. Eventually resigned because he was gonna be fired.

2022- Brian Kelly. ???

Will Kelly become the second to win the SEC as a first year coach?

Will Kelly become the second to go on to win a national title?

Will Kelly become the first to leave his school without being fired or forced out?

I thought Brian Kelly’s first year success was unprecedented

He did fine, but the SECw is pretty bad this year.

I know we say that and how it sounds, but this year it is the truth. I don't think you can argue that.

Winning the division is good though no matter what.

Edit:

How many appearances did Miles have in the Championship game? Was it once?

I'd rank them this way.

1. Malzahn in 2013. It was a 3-9 team the previous year. Took a new QB who had been a DB at the college level and ran a really efficient offense. He not only won the SEC, but came within a hair of winning it all.

2. Kelly in 2022. Not a good team last year, but a good bit of talent still on it.

3. McElwain in 2015. Defense was loaded. It was not a great team, but the division was weak. He could coach offense well enough to win games with the D, something Will's OCs only did once really.

4. Miles in 2005- took over Saban's machine with no Saban to compete against.

Nothing could happen tomorrow to change the rankings. At best, Kelly will have a three loss champ not in the playoff.
But with a loss, I'd still rank him ahead of the others behind him.

Not to diminish what BK was able to accomplish, but I don’t think there is any question that the transfer portal makes the turnaround much easier and faster. And, the West is clearly down a notch this year. All that being said, he still did a great job, to get those results.

I’m pretty sure this is because he was having sexual relations with a Selachimorpha.

Malzahn in 2013. It was an average team at best the previous year.

Lol, it was arguably the worst SEC team in history. Especially from a member of the "Big 6".

I fixed it. Confused that team with the bowl eligible 2011 one.

No doubt on both. Transfer portal has changed the game

Not quite. It’s almost unprecedented, though. Much like Georgia’s national championship last year.

How many coaches actually leave their job because they want to?

1993-Terry Bowden won the division but we were ineligible to play in the SECCG because of probation.

It's actually pretty comparable to the east, from top to bottom.

The national championship game, not the SECCG.

You can downplay what Kelly did all you want. The fact remains LSU was a dumpster fire a year ago and played in a bowl game with 39 scholarship players and WR playing QB. They also lost who most people considered to be the team’s best defensive player in the first half of the first game. No doubt the transfer portal helped enormously, but he did a fantastic job.
