If a kid joins the portal should he be allowed back (not regarding King), or like draft?

I dont want to rehash the Landen King issue. Im speaking overall, should a player be able to announce entering the portal to "test the waters" (ie hold your current team for ransom for NIL money) or once they announce they are gone?

I noticed in the past year less than half the players who entered the portal actually changed teams. Its legal now and I dont blame them, but this will very quickly get out of hand, if it hasnt already, given there is nothing but upside in exploring options, and very disruptive to the team itself.

Free agency has come to college football.

Many good G5 and lower level power 5 school players will seek more exposure in the future.

There is a 6’7” WR at Bowling Green that might be worth a look.

Depends on why. If he entered portal for nil money then I’d say let him go. If he left due to issues with coaches and coaches changed or the issues were resolved then yes.

So “it depends”

It depends on circumstance, but I am giving every player who went in under Harsin a pass because none of them deserved that misery.

Welcome to the state of CFB circa 2022.

NIL and the portal have changed the sport irrevocably. For better or worse.

Roster management - which is rapidly becoming a balancing act between the need for top talent vs. the potential to destroy team chemistry over money and ego - is almost as vital to success as Xs and Os.

Physically gifted players have all the leverage, often without the maturity and critical thinking skills they need to make the right decisions for their futures.

Agreed! Some players and coaches just don't seem to mesh. And from the rumors it seems harsin was a dickhole. Could have been a huge personality conflict.

Very true Fearless.

And most of these kids will soon realize its a business once they sign the NIL, cant have your cake and eat it too. If you dont perform, your contract can be dropped just as quickly.

Guys I wasnt talking about Auburn specifically, I meant the NCAA setting a rule, like they have for pros, once you announce for the draft, you gone.

As it stands, you are married, can go screw around for a couple of weeks and come back home if you dont find what you want, hence the fact nationwide those entering the portal are skyrocketing, yet less than half actually move.

Granted a lot are just seeing if they can get some interest at a better program, but it should come at some cost, its very disruptive to the team. Heck roster management will be darn near impossible, you think you need 3 OL so you focus there, and a week later 3 DL announce, and on and on.

Kids who entered the portal before Harsin was fired should absolutely be allowed back.

Ironically, it would have been far better for the sport if they had legalized schools paying the players directly and instituted a salary cap with performance bonuses.

Yes but teams don’t have to accept them back. The unfortunate reality is not all kids are transferring to a better situation or better football program.

Agreed Fearless, I just dont think people realize this is the beginning. Im glad we finally got our NIL ducks in a row, finally, but it will evolve far far beyond what it is now.

Eventually it will be an organization akin to the front office of an NFL team. Contract renewals for all players, budgets for new recruits by position. An entirely separate department just for fundraising. Ironically they will be competing against the University to convince donors to the NIL and not the University or schools within the University.

And recruiting dept within the school will have a separate division specifically to look at other teams and the potential targets for NIL.

The head of the NIL will be akin to a general manager, with much more influence over the program than imagined now.

And boosters will become even more important. The good thing is, God bless TBoone, if he was still alive in this era Okie State would be racking up national titles.

I read an article about his relationship with the program, I believe 165 million of his donations were specifically for athletics. The coach basically said "When TBoone calls, I dont just take the call, I take the call and say Ill be there in 15 minutes Miiisssttteerrr Pickens sir".

I think it gives the school the option on what they want to do. If you enter the portal now and the school gives your scholarship to a 5* senior... welp... sorry bud. It cuts both ways.
