Saban would voluntarily lose 83 million dollars if he retires at the end of the season.

Just a reminder that he has essentially the same contract as Jimbo through the 2030 season. No buyout. He is wildly incentivized to not retire, and rather, be forced or negotiated out. Financially, Bama may be in quite a hole as well if Saban goes downhill quickly.

Saban's eventual "retirement" in the next few years will look something along the lines of him staying with the athletic department in an "advisory" or "ambassador" capacity and still making either his full salary (if forced out on bad terms), or a reduced but still substantial amount (if it is mostly Saban that wants out and he can make up the difference with a tv gig). This will all depend on either how bad Saban wants to retire (doubtful) or how bad the university needs him to retire (quite possible).

Y’all just went on the road to beat the #11 team in the nation that was playing for a chance to go to Atlanta. Y’all need to settle down.

Saban looks miserable on the sidelines this year. Surely he has enough money to live quite nicely for the remainder of his life. Life is short. Go retire.

Saban's not going anywhere until he decides. He's not getting fired.

He’s not retiring. Quit being a bunch of whiny babies. Maybe appreciate the guy more and trust him given what he’s done for you all

It's been a pretty miserable team to watch play.

He was pretty happy last night in the 2nd half when they actually played with some fire.

Is Saban still upside down in Baton Rouge real estate?

I'm not saying it will never happen, but I have trouble imagining a world in which Saban is a perennial 3-4 loss a season coach at this point in his career. I think he is too big of a narcissist (in a positive way in this case) to keep himself in that situation.

Sorry to hear that. Unfortunately(or fortunately for rest of SEC) time is an undefeated opponent, and Saban going head up against it now. He is old and not the same, and it will only get worse.

Think the late Bobby Bowden and Joe Pa years. Saban is at the beginning of that now.

Narcissists see a 3-4 loss program and believe they are the only person who can fix it. "I'll turn things around and then retire." But to my point, even if Saban deep down is ready to retire, he's not walking from that kind of money. He will make the university pay it to get rid of him, because that is the contract we gave him.

Saban will choose when he is done. He will be great until he retires, maybe not at the clip he won over the past 12 years, but better than any other option.

I'm not saying the sky has fallen and we are in crisis. But we need to be real about the fact that we are financially tied to a potential Bowden/Paterno style lengthy downfall if it happens.

And when he chooses to be done, he will demand a ton of money to leave unless it is in 2030.

The eventual Saban end game is so damn hard to predict. I can see him (God forbid) going the Bear Bryant route and basically coaching until he dies. I can also see him realizing he has lost it, and going to the lake and never being heard from again. Or something as unlikely as in between where he is an ambassador to Bama ala Pat Dye was to Auburn.

I see Saban going out like a boss. I bet when he hangs it up he will name his replacement and shake his hand wishing him good fortune

He was smiling pretty big after the win. Every coach looks miserable during a game. If he is going downhill, why would y’all want him to retire? I want to see more battles between him and BK.

I suppose my point is that everyone envisions Saban retiring in glory and no longer being paid (like a normal retirement). But Saban and Jimbo demanded these unique zero buyout contracts for a reason. They give the head coach total control with almost no threat of being fired, and they protect the coach in the end (whether that is firing or an early "negotiated" retirement). Alabama is either going to pay Jimbo style money for 8 more seasons of great football, 8 more seasons of cruddy football, or for 8 years of Saban watching ducks shite at the lake. We are paying the balance of that contract one way or another and it is just as bad as Jimbo's if the results start to suck.
