Let me tell you why he is the hof, he actually hit the screen in the super dome twice in one day and a few others as well, his punts were that freaking high

A Southern Miss legend

Dude was a 1st Round Pick as a punter and it worked

quote:I have never understood why college coaches were hesitant to "waste" a scholarship for a punter and place kicker. I knew a guy who was a walk on at Southern in baseball and many people didn't know but he could throw a 90+ mph fastball back when 90+ was unheard of except in the pro's. Dude would have been great at any sport he tried. Imagine if soccer was a thing back in that day.

“RIP. Was the legend when I was a kid. But it's very interesting that he is the only true punter in the HOF. His stats are not even top 20 for punting average.
this is a position the HOF is severely lacking in recognizing.”
His hang time was probably the longest in history if they had/have a stat for that. His booming punts were known more for their altitude than distance though as you noted the 42 yard average is still solid. I would suspect return yardage against was minute as well. Though again there may not be a stat to measure that either. Finally, punts downed inside the 10 yard line are probably up there as well if they were recorded back then.
Al Davis recognized the importance of field position and had a stroke of genius in drafting him in the first round.
RIP Ray Guy.
Oh and he had a 93 yard punt against Ole Miss that traveled about 80 yards in the air.

quote:Good God. This is going to end up being a Region 2 AA GISA family reunion. Briarwood had a pretty good kicker too.
I'm from Thomson and played at Briarwood in the late 90s

Yep. I was there in the early 90s. I blew out my knee against Burke County in 1991. Gene Walker had replaced Luther Welch that year. I was in and out of Mcduffie county from 1988-1994 and 2000-2017.

He had a Son that played QB at Thomson and later at Briarwood I believe.

When did the Wilson family sell/close the white columns? I read the Mcduffie Progress today that a car wash was going in and the white columns was being torn down. Back in 94 that was the only place to eat that was “fancy” in Thomson.

Chris Mohr played at Briarwood. That cat could kick a ball too.

Chris Mohr was phenomenal. I’m pretty sure advise from Ray was given. I really have no clue as to that fact, but I had a weak leg as a punter and a few adjustments made a huge difference.
The man was a freak punter.
The boom referred to by another poster was very real. Crappy 1970’s television audio was no match. What the stadium heard is what we heard in our living room. On a Zenith television.
Sad day for me.

A lot to put him is not mentioned here. He set records as a defensive back at USM as well. Also pitched a no hitter in baseball. All around incredible athlete you don’t see now. And punting averages are deceptive. How many times short punts pin an opponent back is not taken into account. We don’t see 93 yard punts every Saturday in this game. He did it against the Rebs. He was unreal.

Very sad day.
As a kid, I used to get excited if the Raiders were on TV, just to watch Ray Guy punt.

Condolences to his family for their loss.
I hated the Raiders back in the day, but never hated Ray Guy. He was the best punter that I’ve EVER seen play the game.

Same. He taught me some stuff I would have not learned anywhere else.
Learning who he was, and putting that into perspective that he took time to personally teach me, a nobody place kicker (not even his forte)
Dude was a legend and his name needs to be spoken so future generations understand his impact on the game.

I remember a 4th and 24 with a bad snap to Ray Guy backed-up in the deep end zone. Ray made a great run and gained a first down. That play might have been in a playoff game but maybe not.
