For thinking we’re going to fade like Tennessee did…

Outside of ‘04, ‘10, and ‘13 and mayyyybe 2017, we already are pretty much annually irrelevant.
Since 2001, we’ve have 12 (count the TWELVE) 5+ loss seasons. UT had 13 over that same stretch if my numbers are correct.
If we are to hire a competent AD and a consistent HC it will be the first time in a long long time, really since Dye was AD/HC.
In the 21 years preceding Dye we had eleven (11) 4-loss seasons (I’m taking into account fewer games and 4 losses as a relevant comparison vs 5 in the modern era)

CFB is different now with NIL and the portal. We land a good coach that actually likes to do the part of his job that’s important, recruiting, we can fill a lot of missing pieces quickly.
Days of wondering in the desert are done if you make a competent hire.

We have a new president and will have a new AD likely Mcglyn. We haven’t had a competent hire since Tubbs. One could argue that Tubbs was the biggest name we hired at the time since Shug. He was a proven winner in the SEC. Given our history I expect we get someone along the line of Pittman. A long time SEC assistant.

quote:Despite this we are the 15th winningest P5 program over that stretch (#5 SEC). And your comparison to Tennessee is somewhat questionable, in that while we had only one less 5+ loss season in those 21 years, they had 8 seasons of 7 or more losses while we had only 3.

From 2001-2021 our winning percentage is .65926, which translates to 7.9 wins over a 12 game season. So roughly 8-4. (For comparative purposes, over that same stretch Tennessee's winning percentage is only .56274, or an average of 6.75 wins in 12 games).
From 1960-1980 our winning percentage was .63436, or 7.6 wins out of 12. Not a huge difference, but not insignificant either.
Most of this is irrelevant in the current CFB landscape. NIL and the portal have altered reality to the point that even the latter part of the last decade is a foreign country.

Every so often we get these "know who your are, boy" posts that basically tell us we should never expect to be better.

His SEC records at OM was 12-20 (25-20 overall).
Not sure I'd call that "proven"

If winning the SEC or playing in the national championship are the only ways to be relevant, then most most teams aren't ever relevant.
Many of those years we were a top 15-25 team that was on the brink of being good, which I would consider "relevant".
I don't have the expectation of being in the playoffs annually. I'd like to go into every season thinking "if things fall our way we could make it into the playoffs", but many years we're going to fall short and end up top 15-25.
I'd also like to go into every game thinking we have a chance to win. That's no longer the case.

The year before we hired him he was 8-4, also remember Ole Miss was on probation for 4 years from 94-98. No tv or bowls for first couple years also scholarship limitations. He only had one losing season overall.

Oh, I'm aware. But it was stated that he was a "proven winner in the SEC". But that's not really the case. When you break it down and look at his record at OM: 12-20 in the SEC and 25-20 overall, he beat up on a bunch of OOC teams. Now, I'm not gonna go back and look through his 4 or 5 seasons @ OM to see what that OOC schedule looked like, but back in that time, there wasn't more than one "P5" OOC game on any SEC schedules that I can remember. Unless you're counting bowl games, which I'm not really, so subtract 4 or 5 wins off that overall total (since all 20 losses were in SEC play) just for the sake of saying they went to and won all his bowl games. He's hovering right around .500 for his entire tenure at OM.
I just don't see the justification for saying that TT was a known, proven, winning commodity in the SEC before he got the job at Auburn. He wasn't. His OM tenure, while a lot shorter, looks like Gus at Auburn. A bunch of average seasons where you take 4 or 5 losses in conference and pad the record with some OOC cupcakes. It wasn't horrible, but it definitely wasn't good when you look at what was done in conference.
ETA: And I love Tubs. I was in school from 2003-2006 so I got to see it up close and it was my favorite period of Auburn football. But just looking at his OM tenure, I can't see how he can be called a proven winner in the SEC before he took over at AU

I’m not saying “know who you are, we should never expect to be better” I’m saying “you are what your record says you are”. Doesn’t mean that can’t change, but it is what it is at this point. Right there in black-and-white.

While UT was losing to bama 15 straight years(or was it 16? Don't care), Auburn was winning SEC titles, a National Title, and beating bama more than any other SEC team. Or any OTHER team in the country, for that matter.
But yeah, irrelevant.

Just since nobody said it, he never beat Auburn while at Ole Piss. He was known to be a wild card and a gambler on special teams. He brought a defense first approach and his time here was mostly all of that. His offensive approach was his demise. That and his lack of recruiting at the end. He was also hungry to prove himself. In the beginning.
We need a hungry coach and we probably don’t need to throw money at them. But the market has screwed that approach. It’s why Harsin will be rich for nothing.

Nah.
Auburn's Post-Season rankings (AP):
2019: 14th
2017: 10th
2016: 24th
2014: 22nd
2013: 2nd, SEC CHAMPIONS
2010: 1st, NATIONAL CHAMPIONS
2007: 15th
2006: 8th
2005: 14th
2004: 2nd, SEC CHAMPIONS
2002: 14th
2000: 18th
Most of the years that were not mentioned, we were ranked and were dropped. I hate the fact that people continue this narrative that we shouldn't deserve a better product.
We are 13th in the country most wins, We are 20th in winning percentage, we are 17th in unweighted winning percentage (10th if you wanna do weighted anyways), we are a good football program historically, even ffs we started our football program with a 1-0-0 record
Granted, that might not mean much, but still...we won shite.

I became an Auburn fan in 2001 thus I’m a grizzled, veteran Auburn fan with a whole bag of DGAF if I need it.
Since I’ve been a fan it’s been an amazing ride. Jump aboard folks, cannot go much lower than 3 total wins in a season
