San Diego State Offensive Profile (per Shot Quality)

Half Court - 88% (#298)
Transition - 11% (#66)

P&R Ball Screens - 18% (#47)
Isolation - 6% (#93)

Post-Up - 8% (#48)
Midrange - 27% (#12)
Off the Dribble 3 - 12% (#226)
Catch & Shoot 3 - 20% (#198)

1/3 of their shots are post ups or mid-range shots

We are going to eat these mother frickers up when they are on offense

When it comes to matchups is this team just a glorified Miss St? I know they are a quality team but we’ve seen teams every bit as tough throughout conf play.

It’s always possible to lose in the dance but it feels like it would take a monumental collapse on our part to lose this matchup.

It was on purpose IMO. I think Saban is worried Oats will start cutting into the NIL money Saban gets if he keeps having success

If we can keep Clowney, Miller, and Bediako out of foul trouble, I completely agree. Their length causes so much disruption on both ends.

Last thing I’ll say on this here...coaches have a mutual respect for each other. They all go through the same shite. If anyone thinks Nick was purposefully taking a shot at Nate then you have the IQ level of a goldfish.

They are a much better offensive team than Mississippi State. Honestly they probably compare more to Tennessee than anyone else, though I'm not sure stylistically they play defense the same way.

SDSU
#4 Defense
#52 Offense
#256 Tempo
#4 3PT Def

Tennessee
#1 Defense
#53 Offense
#279 Tempo
#1 3PT Def

The biggest differences are
- Tennessee is a much better 2PT defense than SDSU. Tennessee is 11th in 2PT% defense where SDSU is 154th. Tennessee gives up free throws more than SDSU (#245 vs #139). Both of those tell me SDSU is less physical in approach than Tennessee.
- Tennessee turns people over more than SDSU (#21 turnover D vs #99). Another indicator that SDSU is more of switch everything and less attacking physicality than Tennessee.

On offense, I think SDSU really relies on attacking the rim and if they get cut off shooting mid-range shots along with old school post ups. As long as we stay out of foul trouble I think they should have a very difficult time scoring against us.

Do they foul nonstop like Tennessee?

No, like I said, I don't think they play the same style defensively that Tennessee does. Much more like us in terms of switching and staying in front with length than constant physicality.

They are very similar to Tenn.. Older team, they basically play thug ball..just like TN.

If the refs are swallowing the whistle, its going to be a tough game. My hope is that the competition they've played isn't that great so their numbers are inflated a bit.

They seem like a smaller, slightly quicker Miss St.

I watched the condensed games on the March madness YouTube channel. Now, it only shows made field goals. But one thing I noticed about their offense on the first weekend, is the shots they made were mostly easy, good looks. Neither opponent had any defensive post presence. Lots of open lanes.

Then I watched us vs Maryland. And that was some grown arse man basketball. They made some tough as nails shots. Nothing was easy. They earned damn near every point.

And that's what we do. Looking at the analytics, we're not the best stealing, blocking, rebounding team (all by percentages, not total number). But where we are top 3 is making people miss. 2 fga and 3 fga are incredibly low. Every shot, there's some long armed dude coming at you. If they do get open, we still fight and closeout.

Now, if we're hustling, closing out, and fighting for those blue collar points, we are a nightmare for teams. If we play like that and lose, well touché and congrats.

But we've seen what the SEC is about least week. It's official a top basketball conference. Nobody this weekend is doing something we haven't seen.

So put on your high heeled sneakers and your wig hat on your head.

Do y’all think we have switched the balls we practice with to match the ball used in the NCAAt or are we still practicing with the Nike balls?

Saban is not taking deliberate shots at Oats or the Basketball Program. Saban is not jealous of the basketball program. Saban is not worried about basketball taking away NIL money from the football program. He used a phrase that has been used in situations when someone is in trouble forever. The timing is unfortunate.

But Saban didn't do it on purpose. Is he aware of what the basketball program has been going through since January? Absolutely. Does he know the specific fake outrages pieces that have been written in that time? No. He doesn't have social media and he certainly doesn't read outkick or AL.com. I sincerely doubt he was aware Oats caused a media storm by using that exact same phrase a few weeks back.

Wild stat - Baylor allowed opponents to make 71.3% of their shots at the rim this season. That is #363 out of 363 in D1 (dead last).

We are going to funnel them into shooting 40 mid-range jump shots

That's insane to me that a team who is 154th in 2pt% allowed (especially given their level of competition) has the 4th ranked defense, and even more insane given the fact that they're mediocre at turning teams over which means they don't make up for it anywhere other than on 3pt defense.

Are you able to run the numbers since Feb 1? What I saw yesterday is that they had the number 1 defense since then. Watching what I have, it looks like aside from the switching, they do an excellent job of staying in front of the ball handler with proper spacing-they didn't crowd the ball handler. The were very good with defensive positioning off ball as well. Always in position to help. I haven't watched them much against the pick and roll though. They may struggle with it.

SDS doesn't have the higher defensive turnover numbers because of the switching and not overplaying on defense like Tenn will do. They want to extend possessions. Overplaying on defense can increase the number of possessions and tempo.

I do think we can cause their offense a lot of issues.

You can, but they've played a mid-major schedule since then, which makes it hard to put a ton of stock in that stat (which I've heard too). Sure it is adjusted to opponent, but when none of your opponents are Top 25 teams and only 2 are in the Top 50.......hard to get a judgement.

Since February 1

SDSU
#7 overall
#1 defense
#123 offense
#333 tempo
#2 3PT def

Alabama
#4 overall
#4 defense
#14 offense
#32 tempo
#84 3PT def

SDSU's schedule since February 1st

@ #28 Utah State (won by 2)
N #28 Utah State (won by 5)
@ #41 Boise State (lost by 6)
vs #41 Boise State (won by 20)
N #69 Charleston (won by 6)
@ #70 New Mexico (won by 2)
N #93 Furman (won by 23)
vs #96 UNLV (won by 11)
N #103 San Jose State (won by 15)
N #106 Colorado State (won by 3)
vs #106 Colorado State (won by 19)
@ #132 Fresno State (won by 2)
vs #147 Wyoming (won by 17)

They've played the easiest first 2 games of the tournament by far for any team still around.

The good news is that Maryland chased us off the three point line better in the first half than anybody has this season. We adjusted, but it definitely threw us off in the first half. Sounds like we'll get the same treatment from SDSU.
