PSA about officiating

Yes, I’m disappointed in the outcome and miffed about some of the calls in the game. I still hate Phil fulmer and Roy Cramer.
The best football officials work 12-13 games per year. That’s all. Expecting perfection ain’t gonna happen. It’d be like playing golf on an actual really long golf course 12-13 times per year and expecting to be a Pro golfer, or at least scratch. If you know a guy that can golf like that, and we all do, you’d need to find enough guys just like him to make up 65-75 crews for a typical Saturday . And pay them really well for taking 12-13 consecutive Fridays off the day job. Be available every now and then for a midweek game too.
Coach Bryant said leave no doubt about the results and officials wouldn’t be a factor. Coach Saban calls it noise or clutter. Both coaches meant control the things you can control and the rest will work itself out.
Even with the disappointing outcome, Bama had its chances. A defense that gives up north of 35 points, an offense that can’t run down the clock when it matters the most, and special teams with two big mistakes/fails, makes for an almost impossible set of barriers to overcome.
And that’s before assigning the blame to the officials.
My $.02.

We have review and they screwed up on review. This crew needs fired not just disbanded.

Agreed. Refs made some bad calls, and it affected the score, but the refs had nothing to do with what transpired in this game.
Blaming the refs cheapens the actual problems this team has right now. 49 points should be enough to beat anyone, even with the worst refs of all time

We get reviewed every week at the HS level and sent videos from Hudl on our good and bad mechanics… I would imagine it is much more scrutinized at the college level. I don’t see ANY way this crew can’t get some kind of repercussions

That’s fine and I agree you have to overcome stuff like bad officiating. With that said that crew did a really bad job and just like anyone else who does a really bad job there should be consequences. They absolutely let the atmosphere influence their calls. That is unacceptable to work in the SEC. They can probably work sunbelt or something where they won’t be overwhelmed by the moment.

Lol. If you believe officials bad calls affected the score of a 3 point game then you can’t say that those bad calls had nothing to do with what transpired.
You can believe Alabama should have played better to overcome those score affecting bad calls, which is true. Should have won regardless and blew it
Regroup, win out and hope for a rematch with UT in Atlanta and restore order. Would love for UTs program defining streak breaker to last less than 2 months. Would be hilarious.

Blaming the officials is for teams that aren't more talented than every team they play. It's one thing if you play a great game, and lose on a bad call to a team that's probably more talented than you are. It's another if you have every advantage, and rack up record penalties all year. You can't blame the officials when it happens for the 7th time in a row.

Not sure what all can be changed while under review. Probably something for the competition committee to review though.

Technology, even from a less than advantageous angle, can really help a new official willing to seriously review so many facets of his technique and mechanics. That’s the blessing.
I’m sure it’s a curse when it reveals something you missed.

i.e...LSU fans.
Six of the 17 were false start/offsides/delay. We also had an illegal participation.
One of the holds, on a run around the right end, our guy on that end literally had his arms around the defender and took him to the ground. Easy call.

I’d give that crew a D grade. Too many multi official conferences, down marker control, and the body mechanics and facial expressions made them appear nervous. You can’t show that if you want a high grade.

Sadly, Bama merits waaay too many of the penalties. Some of the mental mistakes make me lose essential tooth enamel

The way we play the game now, I'm all for eliminating the kickoff from the game. We either fair catch or get stopped short of the 25, and then usually get a block in the back penalty. It's extremely rare for us to get the ball past the 25.

down marker control,
High school crews...especially head linesmen...all over America last week managed to competently manage their chain crews without fricking up. A head linesman whose job it is every play to supervise the chain crew amd down marker...plus the other seven zebras who wear the wristband and move the loop from finger to finger after every play. The whole crew should have been embarrassed.

The review of targeting when Bryce got hit and to call it NOT targeting is the big one for me. Before the review, the commentators and "rules specialist" talked about how it was the very definition of targeting. AMAZINGLY, after the review, they all fell in lockstep to the non-targeting.
Absolute joke. Those guys need to grow a pair and call it for what it was but they are so scared to offend people in charge. They all make such a big deal about player safety then allow all the hits on Bryce that weren't called.

After watching the replay, that same rules specialist said the defender led with his shoulder and that it wasn't targeting. Even the alleged rules specialist isn't always right.

Yeah, for sure a few of those penalties or non calls were insanely bad, specifically the late hit targeting on Bryce, especially considering the focus on QB safety. That was just egregious.
But lets say you take away a few of those, and we are still at like 13-15 legit penalties. That's inexcusable. You can't blame a loss on refs when we have that many fouls, as well as horrible defense, and a dumb, unforced turnover in your own territory, and a missed game-winning FG after some shitty clock management.
We got beat. They wanted it more. Simple as that.
