He was born in Gainesville, and worked on the Grounds Crew at UF...so it's legit for them to claim him.

He was a janitor and cleaned the toilets around UF for a couple of weeks in his early 20s.
UF spun that into some bullshite yarn that he was like Johnny Appleseed, planting trees all over campus, so they named a lime tree after him. Petty admitted that he never planted anything on UF’s campus.
